There are many possible scenarios as to what became of Madeleine but read here if you really want to know. Nick has explored what may have happened based on evidence, and the on-going coverup and money grab that is explored in all 3 books coupled with links and thought-provoking detail. I thought it was excellent.

Probably the strangest book I have ever read. It reads like pages of notes, with scribbles and corrections throughout. Not sure whether the raven analogy is the writer trying to be ' clever', or he's under the influence of some drug. Very irritating.I persevered with it, skimming quickly over the really annoying passages, but these got longer as the book progressed. No real analysis of fact. The arguments outlined appeared to be based on suppositions, and comparisons with other cases. It was a great relief to reach the end. I feel very sorry for the poor mccanns have been through so much, and this book does not help. Its people like Van der Leek who takes the focus off madaleine and her disappearance, and refocuses the attention on proven lies and gossip.

I no longer have a shred of 'Doubt' about the possible and probable culpability of poor Madeleine's 'mother' and 'father'. The questions of her origins and remains are followed by the raven closely in this book.Obvious psychological questions are finally explained such as: How were the Mccanns SO sure she was 'taken' from the very second they supposedly found her missing? Why does this case seem analogous to the Ramsey Case?I've read countless titles by Nick and Lisa and found this to be one of their most compelling, gruesome, and the explosive narratives to date outside of 'The Craven Silence'

If it's anything like the first one, this is more drivel from a pandering and utterly talentless writer. The positive reviews he's gotten come mostly from his equally sordid co-authors.

This is an update of later data from his first book on the same topic. I learned a lot from the first book and the second has not disappointed. Dr. Finke is one of my favorite researchers and authors on church growth, church health and how to assess denominational trends. He jumps over style to substance as the keys to getting and maintaining members. He punctures the self-serving rationalization a of Mainline apologists for why they are dead or dying. I also appreciate his economic model for it clarifies and simplifies growth and reduction patterns. Despite a terrible title, the book is a mother lode of useful information for Pastors and a Theologians as well as interested Laity.

Had to read this book for a class. It's actually a fascinating read that delves into American religiosity and explains how America has become more observant over the years, and why some churches are growing while others shrink. Quite readable and interesting for anyone with a broad curiosity about American religion.

Brilliant book. Great use of much overlooked data. Should be read by all church leaders, clergy and laity. An effort could have been made to connect church movements with contemporary political movements, as they are in fact closely associated. Very informative nevertheless.

For years, Americans have been fed the story that religious belief in America is diminishing, as more citizens "drift away" from various churches toward secularism. The authors of this book, who examined thousands of church records and other documents from a more critical viewpoint, show this belief is false. The statistics, when evaluated objectively rather than through the typical "falling away from God" paranoia, show religious activity in the US has actually been rising since Colonial times. Data doesn't lie. While church membership was higher on paper during the Colonial period, this is only because Colonies and individual towns were managed directly through local churches. These churches collected taxes from all citizens. Therefore churches showed high "membership" rates since nearly all citizens were listed on their rolls. Anyone who paid taxes or fees for residency were counted as "members." Other, less objective researchers have missed this point, and claimed high membership meant a high level of religious fervor during the early Colonial period. This really wasn't the case. Remember, only 35 of the 105 Mayflower colonists were Puritans. The others were merchants, fishermen, trappers, and others who were simply traveling to America. Most histories don't note this. Why are Americans constantly bombarded by the idea that the US is becoming "less Christian" than it was before? Primarily it's because certain sects have lost members while others gained them. Some sects that were dominant in early America barely exist today.Another force is also at work here. Religious leaders love to portray the church as "oppressed" by evil secular forces. They'd rather appeal to followers' emotions and fears than admit that American churches are doing rather well. Doing so wouldn't give church leaders the opportunity to paint an "us vs. them" battle, or to insist that Christianity is under attack.Fincke & Stark have done a great service by conducting their statistical analysis of the reality of this situation. While church leaders will wail and gnash their teeth at the authors' conclusions, rational people may start to understand how the American public has been manipulated. That's a good thing.

No more mainline church propaganda about why denominations lose members. You either stay strong in your doctrine and God's word or you begin to become irrelevant to those seeking God because you have abandoned God and His Word. This book presents the facts without editorial content. You cannot miss the point.

If someone thinks that religion, in order to attract new believers, should be in harmony with this world, woe betides him, he seems to be wrong. The authors explain that for more than two centuries, in America, the religious denominations with better scores in rates of growth were those which were organized sect-like, i.e., maintained distance with the world by imposing heavy demands upon his flock (but also granting them great rewards). On the other side, those which tried and compromised, in order to relieve tensions and differences with their society (i.e., those church-like) have been steadily declining. Difference pays, assimilation and ecumenism leads to bankruptcy. Why? Read the book and you will find out, and although perhaps you will be somewhat shocked to see religion explained by often using economic terminology, do not worry, the book is not irreverent. Besides, it is not a difficult read (only 300 pages) though it is not a light read either (content: 5 starts; pleasure: 4 to 3).P.S. For more information, I would also suggest reading the reviews of the first edition of this work ("The Churching of America, 1776-1990").

Finke and Stark do an amazing job talking about the history of America and what helped found our nation. If you are looking for a great book about the history and religion of America and desire the perspective of sociologists you will love this book. They keep things interesting and on topic.

Very interesting & informative

This is an ABRIDGED version - not the original book! But there's no way to know that unless you've just read the original. I happened to be replacing my old torn, vintage copies with newer, sturdier ones for my toddler and that's the only reason I noticed the omission of certain words and sentences. I was outraged! Why would you edit out part of a children's classic? It's a classic for a reason and it's not like the original is much longer or harder to read - it's not Shakespeare. Frankly, I was pretty turned off by all the heavy-handed "I can read! Level 2!" stuff splashed all over the book that emphasizes mastering an academic skill rather than enjoying a funny book. Way to turn off kids AND parents...even more so when the message is, "Learn to read - but not REAL books."

This book was a required book for my daughter at school. This week the class began to read it and she noticed that her words were not matching up with her teacher's or classmates' books. My wife and I then found in fine print inside the book that this was an abridged version. Who does this to a children's book!? At least they could have had the decency to point it out somewhere. Nobody asked for an abridged version.

My children love this book! (Girls aged 2,4, and 6). We have read a few of the Frances stories, but this seems to be a favorite. Picky eater Frances is given the opportunity to eat her favorite foods--bread and jam--for every meal. Of course, she discovers this to be monotonous and the story concludes with her eating with relish whatever her mother prepares. Simple story, pleasant illustrations, wholesome message. We had originally checked this out from the library from their early reader section (as it says here on the product listing: I Can Read Book 2). However, this book turned out to be a different edition. It doesn't appear to be an I Can Read book at all, but instead is larger and quite a bit longer. This edition has a more complex vocabulary, including words such as "doily" that aren't included in the I Can Read edition. This is fine for us, but you might want to make sure you are getting the edition you want. (Attached photo shows absence of "I Can Read" logo.)

This was one of my favorite books when I was young, and I was happy to read the library's copy to my little ones. However, when I purchased this version on Amazon, it was not the same - they left out sentences here and there which, after reading the library's copy over and over and over, were sorely missed. If you've never read this book before, this version may be ok. However, I'd recommend sticking with the original, unabridged edition. It's not much longer (maybe 1 or 2 pages total?) but is better with all the original text.Another good one about picky eaters is the D.W. the Picky Eater in the Arthur series.

this is an abridged version of this book it does not say so in the listing or on the cover. It is inside very small in the copyright information. very unhappy with it since it takes out the language.

I love Frances, that salty little badger. In this episode, Frances and her pal Albert have a shade war. Naturally everything turns out fine, and everyone learns some valuable lessons. Along the way, Frances treats us to her trademark silly songs and intricate moral conundrums. This one even has some light feminism!

My 3 year old daughter and I both love the original "Best Friends for Frances" book that we borrowed from the library. We kept borrowing it so many times I thought it made sense to buy it. However, this version is edited to make it simpler for new readers and it loses some of the charm in translation. I highly recommend not getting the "I can read" version and just reading the book aloud to your child or waiting until he or she is older and can handle the real thing.

I bought this book for my 5 year old grandson who just had a baby sister. His baby sister had not been brought home from the hospital yet when I gave him the book. He likes the other Francis books, but seems mystified by this one. It may be that Francis is having some disappointments because of having a sense of being left out because of her baby sister - I think he cannot relate to that. I recommend giving this to a child who may already be experiencing some of the difficulties Francis is. It is a delightful book that I think my grandson may come to enjoy as much as he does the other Francis books - but later in his new brother-sister relationship.
