This Beautiful and delightful charm will not only bring conversation when sitting on a coffee-table as a striking centerpiece. First Lady Michelle Obama shares her gardening joy with the nation, from planting to home-grown vegetables and much more. Gardening in both the Northeast and Southwest has been my favorite hobby over twenty-five years, and I also have collected books on anything gardening. Michelle gives simple presentations about different types of foods and the importance to our health for all ages, describes the trials-and-tribulations from planting to harvest, and the joy of including our children on fun gardening projects. The excitement of growing lettuce, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and much more is interesting for all. She also includes fragrance and scented plants such as herbs, and what to plant in different seasons. The First Lady includes stunning photos that will brighten up our day, yummy recipes, and helpful gardening tips. I highly recommend "AMERICAN GROWN" to all garden lovers, and to families who enjoy sharing the intriguing world of gardening. This book is also educational, and can be introduced to young adults who wish to use this book as a guide for science projects. This hands-on gardening book with all its information from gardening to local produce is not only a book to be proud of, but will indeed warm the hearts of gardeners all across the world!

Loved this book! I loved that Mrs. Obama had the vision to create a garden and inspire her family and country to eat better. I was proud of the Obama family for bringing nutrition, and CLASS to the White House.

As a vegetable/fruit/flower gardener for three dozen years now who has accumulated nearly as many garden books, my family reminded me that we hardly needed another "garden book." Yet my gardening interests have grown over many years to include promoting children's gardens in schoolyards, at summer camps, and giving workshops in libraries and in community gardens to demostrate best environmental practices and to answer questions. This book can give hope and joy to individuals, families, and gardening groups who want to make a difference in how we can all grow organically cultivated crops for the table and enjoy the harvest of our efforts. I give credit to First Lady Michelle Obama for using the center stage of the White House Kitchen Garden to improve the nutritional and physical health of individuals who learn by experience what it takes to grow colorful, tasty food in a garden. The photos in this book are inspirational and the Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter layout make this a useful companion year round. This book uses the voices--and photos--of many experienced gardeners from around the country who are a part of the community gardening movement that notes well organized community gardens "grow community" as well as produce.

I LOVE THIS BOOK. And I feel that home gardeners will love it too. The language is very down to earth and you actually hear her speak as you read the text. Very beautiful pictures. I will really miss our FLOTUS.

As a long time gardener, a member of the PA Horticultural Society and having been a judge in the Philadelphia City Gardens contest for close to 20 years there are few things I enjoy more than reading about gardens. I enjoy gardening and I was thrilled to read how this garden was started, how the children were engaged in the garden and the history of gardening at the White House and in areas around the country. I was inspired to garden by my Mother who was inspired by her Dad. My Mom showed me the wonders of my Grandfather's garden when I was a little girl and I am still in awe of what takes place when a seed is planted in the right place under the right conditions. I am thrilled to see other enjoy the garden as I do.

This is a great book. It is pretty. It is informative. Love It.

Very impressed with the graphics, the garden plans and the assortment of plants grown. I enjoyed looking back at some previous gardens and the history that goes along with it. It is wonderful Mrs. Obama supports the efforts of growing gardens across America and the steps she has participated in shows she is willing to put her mouth where her heart is.

Thank you! I'm grateful I purchased this book.....all the information about planting, caring for and picking FRESH veggies from the garden also sharing w/others, is proof of what can be accomplished w/quality leadership. This book is filled w/education for ALL ages.....no descrimination what-so-ever!!!!!!! THANKS-------

Love this book! Beautiful photos and beautifully written!

A classic in the Samurai literature. A bit slow and dry, but worth a read.

A ‘must read’ for those who would explore the concept of mindfulness, regardless of his/her profession, walk of life or spirituality. From a historical perspective, it was gratifying to see how the Zen philosophy was presented to and merged so seemlessly with the martial arts. Two thumbs up. At times rather dense (or perhaps it is the denseness of the reviewer at work), but very much worth it.

The Buddhist approach to life has never made more sense than it did after reading this book. I'd previously dismissed the general Buddhist worldview as too nihilistic (nothing is important or matters, etc.), but that is not at all the case. Plus it gives an amazing perspective on the idea of clearing your mind - it's not something you force, and it doesn't mean making your mind empty, but rather allowing it to flow. The letters primarily deal with martial arts (sword fighting, specifically). I've found the advice to apply very well to my own marital arts study; I practice a Chinese one rather than a Japanese art, but it still holds true. But the advice there is not limited to martial arts only, and I find its lessons coming to mind in day-to-day life as well. It's extremely practical, and doesn't ask you to be some ancient priest on a mountaintop somewhere. The translation reads well (I don't speak Japanese, so can't speak to its accuracy), and the translator helpfully includes notes explaining some of the references and metaphors that Soho used, which really fleshes out the imagery and helps make things understandable. This is one of my favorite philosophical books that I've read to date.

Very deep and enlightening book on zen, martial arts, oriental philosophy and bushido. Highly recommended for anyone trying to grasp some japanese and chinese ways of thinking.

Tremendous and insightful. However I would recommend this mostly for someone who is reasonably experienced both in meditation and in their profession as these things will be hard for a beginner to assimilate and apply.

This book is a great look into Takuan Soho’s thoughts regarding the mindsetof martial artists. I found it to be a fascinating read. It deals with heavy topics so it is not a light read but if you’re even a little interested in Zen and or martial arts (or even psychology) I’m sure you’ll like this one.

I originally read the Book of the Five Rings and this book was recommended as well. I found the underlying philosophical approach of this book to be superior to that of the Book of the Five Rings.

This is my second copy of this book-the first is marked up with underlining and margin notes. There is more to this collection that the first, second, third or even tenth reading!Highly recommended as an addition to your library regardless of your discipline!

Takuan is one of my sources for inspiration, and I value this work. He was born during the Warring States period in 1573 into a Samurai family of the Miura clan, and entered a Jodo-sect Buddhist monastery when he was 10. He joined the Zen Rinzai sect when he was 14, and made history by becoming the abbot of Daitokuji, one of the major temples in Kyoto, at the young age of only 30.He was a prolific writer who composed over 6 major volumes, of which this is but a small fragment. The three works contained here were all written to great sword masters including Yagyu Munenori, and last piece was possibly to the head of the Itto school of swordsmanship, Ono Tadaaki. The purpose of these works is to unify the spirit of Zen with the spirit of the sword. To transcend the physical duel and have unbroken awareness of everything in the moment. This is not a book to read quickly and hope to find entertainment or a lesson in history. This is deep martial philosophy written by an absolute genius and master of some of the highest arts in ancient Japan. The book contains a few images of his art and calligraphy, but unless you know what to look for it is hard to see just how great his work is. I bought a repo scroll of his calligraphy when last I was in Japan. There is a standout quality about his style in that his scripting appears three dimensional. In fact, it is almost impossible for at least my mind to follow some of the path. Never seen anything like it. I own an original Tesshu who was a great master, but there is something unique and special about Takuan's style that suggests he may have indeed been operating on a whole different level."The unfettered Mind" is very advanced stuff. This is not a casual read, and it will appeal to experienced martial artists willing to work with it and apply deep meditation to the many concepts that may not be apparent at first glance. This is one of the greats.

Review

When you’re in a fierce battle against breast cancer, be on the lookout for people―or pets―through whom God delivers His most heartwarming encouragement. My friend Joni Burchett was in the cancer battle for her life, but God blessed her with His warm, personal touch through the pawprints of her Labrador retriever, Hannah. But this isn’t any “dog story.” This is a book filled with courage, yet tenderness; bravery, yet gentleness. I highly recommend Stay to anyone who is looking for a fresh and unusual touch from the Lord! (Joni Eareckson Tada, Founder of Joni and Friends International Disability Center)You can count on one opposable thumb how many books hold my interest. But Dave Burchett has written an incredible piece that describes what we’ve been trying to model to you all about God’s grace, His astonishing love, and what life feels like when humans discover who He’s remade them to be, even on their worst day. And the pages smell like a freshly cut lawn. I gotta get my master to read this! (Bali Lynch, John Lynch’s golden retriever)Dave Burchett has written a truly wonderful book. I don’t know when I’ve shed so many tears, laughed so much, and been moved as deeply. It’s not just because I’m a lover of dogs (I am), but because this book is profound, refreshing, biblical, and true. It “smells like Jesus!” Read it and give it to everyone you know. They will rise up and call you blessed. (Steve Brown, Founder of Key Life Network)

I’m often suspicious of biographies. Most of the time I wonder how well the author got to know the subject of the biography. Did they get to interview the subject personally? Was the subject completely honest with the biographer? Does the biographer have an agenda or viewpoint that contradicts with the real story?I don’t have any of those concerns regarding Dave Burchett’s new book, Stay: Lessons My Dogs Taught Me About Life, Loss, and Grace. Though Dave is writing about Hannah, and later Maggie, he’s telling their story from his perspective – that of a best friend. Because Hannah and Maggie are man’s best friend – dogs. Dave has written what I think is the best biography of an animal as told from a human viewpoint that I’ve ever read.I’ve not stopped thinking about what the vet said after giving Dave the emotional news of a terminal diagnosis for this beloved furry friend. The doctor explained that Hannah didn’t know she had cancer and would live each remaining day with all the life she had in her. “Dogs have no fear of death, so they live in the moment. Enjoy each moment that you have.” What began Dave’s journey of observing and learning from Hannah has the potential to shake you to the core of how you live life. The lessons he learned along the way are for all of us.The freedom and grace Dave discovered through the months that remained for Hannah will shatter your view of rules, legalistic morality, anger, and even death. It’s not a fun story. I knew what was going to happened to Hannah, yet I still cried as Dave recounted the end of Hannah’s life.Initially that was the end of the book. But, in the way that God always gets the last laugh, there would be more to the story. Maggie. A new rescue dog. An opportunity for Dave to teach someone else the lessons of forgiveness and joy he had learned from Hannah. Could a dog eager to destroy some good furniture and quick to hide in shame learn about unconditional love? Could a wild animal discover freedom on a leash? This is a book of humor, faith, the path of loss, and the journey of rediscovering joy. I never learned those lessons from the fish, lizards, and hermit crabs we had as pets. It’s only been with dogs that I’ve experienced those same lessons. Dogs have something to teach us. It may even be why God created them in the first place. Dave knows that and uses his own experiences to get us closer to the heart of God.I suspect at the end of this year I’ll be saying STAY was my favorite book of the year. I highly recommend you get a copy and read it soon. This is a book dog lovers – all animal lovers. It is a book I think every Christian should read – and those who are on the journey of seeking God. It’s also a book for everyone who just loves to read.I suspect Dave’s words will become your own if you read STAY. “Hannah’s journey has changed me. I am more aware of living fully in each moment. I try to live in the freedom of God’s grace. I am accepting with gratitude what each day brings me. I try to find joy even when I don’t feel at my best. Hannah’s graceful and uncomplaining acceptance of pain, and ultimately death, challenges me to become bolder than I have ever been.”

*spoilers**Dave Burchett, leads us on a story of goodness and grace through the life he leads with his dogs, but mostly with his best life friend, Hannah, a golden retriever, the dog his family had during one of the lowest times of their life. When Burchett’s wife was diagnosed with cancer, he started a journal. The book is written from the first person, and as journal entries I loved that about the book. This book was fantastic.During Joni’s cancer treatments, Hannah stayed by their side and seems to “read” her owners behaviors and their love. Giving them some comfort and peace during each treatment and after her surgery. Then sweet Hannah was diagnosed with cancer. They chose a course of treatment that would only make Hannah comfortable and keep her out of pain.During those next few months they saw a lifetime of love, and grace in the way that Hannah lived her life. Putting their needs first. Hannah lived in the moment and was free. One of the best quotes in the book was when the vet told them this “dogs don’t fear death, they live in the moment”After Hannah’s illness took her, Dave thought he would never be able to love again, however, when he saw sweet Savannah’s face, he fell in love. When they brought Savannah home, they knew that her name was too close to Hannah’s so they eventually changed her name to Maggie. In doing so they learned that Maggie, didn’t really realize her name well. When they enrolled Maggie in obedience class, they learned the things she needed. In doing so they learned Maggie needed a leader, someone to take her and tell her yes, no, sit, stay, the commands in every dog’s life, as well as teach her to walk on a leash and guide.Dave took each lesson that he learned and related it back to the Bible with a timely Bible verse, or story from the Bible and this book became a lesson, literally on grace, and humility. Love, loss and learning.Learning from your dog is a very gracious thing because of what they can teach you. Turning that back and about Jesus Christ and how much He sacrificed for us.What a blessing this book was for me. While I love my dog with all my heart and they are treated basically like royalty in my home, I was able to see that every day they give us everything they have every minute of their life.God gives us everything we have, we just have to accept it. What a graceful life lesson this book is. I highly urge you to read it. Read it with your Bible in hand and get a great Bible study as well as just a great read!

Well, I bought the book on Amazon, and I am very pleased with the great stories and insightful wisdom from Dave Burchett, my dear friend from sports television days and still my dear friend as he releases his new book, "Stay, Lessons My Dogs Taught Me About Life, Loss and Grace". When I read Christian literature, I look for a few "must haves", and Dave hit them all; first, there is a compelling story -- without the skills of storytelling, Dave's tome would have been bland and unmotivating, but as it is, it's a page-turner; second, he's done his homework in the word of God, so in laying out his story with his dogs, and the people who love him and his canine family, his references to scripture are timely and succinct. His juxtaposition of fear, love and loss, reveals both a man immersed in faith and yet fearful of "what might come". And yet, regardless of the ups and downs, Dave's experiences lead to insights that bring him and his family to peace, in spite of fear and loss.A motivating, conversational read, well worth the cost and the several hours invested to read it.
