A stunning story about the Cold War that actually began before the end of WWII.USAAF forces, in support of the Red Army advance westward into Poland and Germany, began using "shuttle" missions by their B-24 and B-17 bombers- launch from bases in Britain, France and Italy, strike targets in the eastern areas of the Reich, and continue on to Red Army held territory (as they did not have the range to return to their bases). There, they would re-fuel and re-arm, and strike targets on their way back.Naturally, a number of aircraft were forced to crash-land in territory held by the Soviets, and the USAAF was anxious to get their planes and crews back- and they applied for permission to recover said aircraft.Enter Captain Robert Trimble, newly minted member of the "Lucky Bastards Club", the select few who had managed to complete the required 35 missions over enemy territory before being rotated home. Trimble was called to his CO's office and offered a choice- go home for a three week leave, and then possibly be re-assigned to a new set of combat missions (maybe in the Pacific), or agree to a "safer" aircraft recovery mission in the Eastern European Theater with the willing help of the Communists. Trimble's experience of combat missions flying both B-17s AND B-24s gave him a rather unique set of qualifications- and he was rated one of his squadron's best officers, as well.He began to notice odd things as he began to train for his new mission, not the least of which was the involvement of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). He was to discover that his mission was not only to recover downed US aircraft, he was also to try to repatriate Axis held POWs who had been "liberated" by the Russians. Aircrews who had managed to evade capture by the Germans were treated as heroes by the Reds, but those taken prisoner were considered to be cowards, and abandoned after the POW camps were captured. The Russians performed mass executions of their own people who had been captured by the Nazis, and actively interfered with attempts by the Western Allies to recover theirs. Trimble's assignment was to outfox the Soviets and bring our people home, and in the process freed many more- other allied military, and hundreds of slave workers transported from their native countries to perform duties in the Nazi labor camps. This story is much more than the recollections of one man- it is meticulously researched- many military archives were investigated, and all of Trimble's verifiable details have proven accurate. It is a tale of derring-do, of the nasty politics at work between the "Allies", outright lies, deceits, and obstruction on the part of "Uncle Joe" Stalin, and the bravery and ingenuity of American and other freedom-minded people in a terrible time and place.I cannot recommend this book highly enough- five stars seems inadequate- this story must be known. It screams out for a legitimate historical movie or mini-series ala "Band of Brothers".One more note: I have been a fan of the movie "Patton", starring George C. Scott, for many years. This book illustrates a major failing of that tale. There is a point in the movie where Patton laments his inability to start a new war with the Russians to his friend Omar Bradley, and it is treated as a humorous, insane side-note to General Patton's career. It turns out that General Patton knew full well about the treatment of American POWs in Soviet held territory- treatment that would have been considered an act of war under any other circumstances. See also Bill O'Reilly's book, "Killing Patton".

I was born in October,1945 and as such consider myself "one lucky bastard" in that freedom was my first gift after life itself. After a 20 plus career with the NYPD, I have spent the last 28 years teaching fifth grade, and you better believe that I will introduce my students to the heroic exploits of Capt. Robert Tillman. His story has strengthened my own idea of the greatness of that generation, and of the men and women who suffered in so many countries throughout the world. My own daughter-in-law's grandfather "opened up" about the European theater in my classroom, but informed the students that he could not talk about his liberation of an "unnamed" camp, In closing, I was riveted by Capt. Trimble's story and could feel his fear, anguish, and frustration during those "4" months in hell. I found it particularly ironic that I began the book 70 years to the day in February, 1945 as his journey was initiated. This is a must read for all citizens, who think that they have something to complain about!George M.

2nd book I've read recently by a child of someone who served in WW2 and wanted to tell their parent's story. Well done!Reading how that bastard Stalin and the evil empire, treated Poland, American POWs, and even their own people raised my blood pressure. And how we, the USA, felt it necessary to appease those bastards.People like Captain Trimble and so many others from all countries fought (and continue to fight) to do right by people, to treat them humanely, and to deliver some hope to this world.I applaud the guts and heart of Captain Trimble and the effort and skill of his son in telling his story.

This is a story in the Second World War that needed to be told. We were told that the Russians were our "Allies" during WWII in the fight against the Axis Powers. Alas, it wasn't true. This is the accounting of a man that was tricked into thinking he was just going to be picking up broken airplanes and he not only did what was actually requested of him but went above and beyond. We are so fortunate to live in the time of peace that we do, for the men and women who fought in the Second World War they didn't have this luxury, evil and conceit was ever present and this Airman saw through it all. I was haunted by the account of the P51 pilot who to this day lays in an unmarked grave killed by Russians so they could steal his airplane to study the technology. With the story of that loss comes also many successful missions that saved hundreds of people from certain death.

This is a part of WW2 I had no idea ever took place! Well written and very interesting. A must have for WW2 buffs. Makes you wonder if the Russians really were on our side or not. What a bunch of paranoid jack asses. I guess life was pretty cheap for the commies back then. The hardships suffered by so many in Eastern Europe is beyond imagination. Some very brave American Airmen did all they could to rescue downed American pilots. A must read and I really enjoyed it.

This book tells a haunting and dramatic real life story that will stay with me a long time. It gives at least a small idea of what it was like to be Capt. Trimble, caught between the human suffering on the eastern front (as the Nazi's withdrew and the Soviets advanced) and the big power politics that hindered every effort to relieve that suffering next to impossible. My only slight complaint is that the writing seems to me to be a little melodramatic, when just the facts are enough to move the reader. Still, I recommend this book, both for history buffs and for anyone who wants a glimpse of the realities of the tradgedy of the countless POWs, civilians and concentration camp survivors, displaced by WWII.

This moving, inspirational, gripping story of a committed, creative, open-minded activist and four people who believed every life is worth saving and reached out through social media to everyone and were able to achieve the impossible despite the odds. Included is a history of a not well-known country in the midst of a brutal civil war involving Iran and Saudi Arabia. This proves that goodness, kindness and decency can overcome evil.

This is a must read for every American. This should be taught in high school! If I had had any inkling that I could have so much power to change even some small part of the world when I was in my twenties...Wow. I have so much Faith in our younger generations. We must all live as human beings. We all must seek to understand. If this guy can do it, anyone can...and should!

Understanding the Middle East is a daunting task! Never in my wildest dream did I think I could begin to grasp what a Yemeni suffered and endured and continue to endure. Thank you writing your memoir. Thank you for sharing your unconditional love of your faith and your aspiration to understand my unconditional love of my faith. Live well and may peace continue to follow you.

This book is a must read! The story is aspiring and gives hope that the world is capable of peace and collaboration. I have already bought 3 copies since reading the book and I hope more people share this story in an effort to create a better future.

Very well written account of a Yemeni’s escape to freedom. Amazing what can happen when individuals join together to solve problems. Only wish more was being done on the world stage to help all those still suffering in this poor, war torn country.

I was inspired to do more. I loved that the journey resulted in an increased understanding of the brotherhood of mankind and the fact that there are beautiful people around to help others as their mission in life--if we educate and ask.

One of the best stories about learning to love across all religions that I have ever heard. Mohammed's story shows that we taught to hate and can re-learn to love. It is for sure a nail-biter of a story and miraculous what a few young adults did to save one young man who ended up saving hundreds. Must read! Must order and give as gifts!

Very well written story. It touches your soul and points out all that we are more similar than different as human beings on this planet. We need to reach out and help our neighbors both near and far. The fate of humanity depends on it.

Oskar and the Eight Blessings, by Mark Siegel

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—On the seventh day of Hanukkah in 1938, which also happens to be Christmas Eve, a young refugee boy named Oskar arrives in New York City from the horrors of Nazi Europe with only a photograph and an address to find an aunt he has never meet. As Oskar walks the length of Manhattan, from the Battery to his aunt's home in the north end of the city, he passes and encounters the city's many holiday sights and residents. Each person he meets offers Oskar a small act of kindness, such as the newsstand man who gives Oskar a Superman comic book. Each encounter is a reference to an event which took place in the city in 1938. A constant for Oskar is remembering his father's last words, "Oskar, even in bad times, people can be good. You have to look for the blessings." The majority of illustrations are presented in variously sized panels that move the story along, with inserts of long panel illustrations that serve as a glimpse of Oskar's experiences. VERDICT A wonderful, heartwarming picture book for any library at any time of year.—Diane Olivo-Posner Los Angeles Public Library

#333,213 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I will start off this review by stating that I'm a former colleague of the author. It's a children's book, and to be honest, I don't buy children's books anymore. I bought the book because, well, that's what friends do. But I have to say, I would have enjoyed this book and given it the same rating no matter who wrote it. Oskar's journey grows darker as it progresses, but only because of the setting sun. The light in his heart increases as he goes along, crossing paths with historical figures that should surely lead to discussion opportunities if you read the book to/with your child. I had a tear in my eye on the last page, and anyone who knows me knows what a rare occasion that is. The artist illustrated Oskar's cold and fatigue, and I enjoyed the details that were included. I felt nearly as uplifted at the end of Oskar's journey as Oskar did.

This is a well-written and beautifully illustrated book. I bought it for my sons; they're normally pretty picky and don't necessarily like the books that I (the mom) think are going to be good. But they were completely attentive through this, and only interrupted to ask questions about the historical parts of the story (in short--a great reading experience). We especially appreciated the multiple pictures per-page format. It makes this more like a mini-graphic novel than a typical children's book. The drawings--for example, of old New York City and close-ups of character's reactions--make the story so much more clear and really appeals to visually oriented kids!Similarly, the focus on a single theme (of Oskar's father's wise advice) makes for a great unifying narrative -- it's a message of hope and resilience that even very young children can relate to.

Wise advice from a loving father to a son, "Even in bad times, people can be good. You have to look for the blessings." True during the holidays, times of unrest and war, everyday of our lives. A part of everyday is wonderful or magical; you must have the heart to look for it and appreciate it. The book's suggested age range is Pre-K to 2nd grade. IMO, it is more appropriate for 2nd grade and older. The story is heartwarming. There are many teachable moments and topics. What better time than when your child is snuggled up next to you? Plan to give this a gift this holiday season and will keep a copy for our library.

"Oskar and the Eight Blessings" is a wonderful children's Christmas and Hannukkah historical fiction hardback book measuring 9 by 11 inches. The book has a beautiful full color pictorial cover and matching dust jacket. The dust jacket will hook the attention of the reader as they stare at Oskar's big hazel doe eyes and the expression on his face. Readers will want to find out why Oskar has this expression and what he is doing in a city of giant skyscrapers. The colors used by the illustrator on the cover/dust jacket and the individual page illustrations are mostly grays, browns, and blacks. These colors help to convey the feeling of loneliness, coldness, and fear that a brand new refugee to New York might experience. Each page is heavily illustrated with limited amounts of texts - from a sentence or two to a brief paragraph. As one reads the book, they sense the fear, despair and uneasiness in Oskar as he arrives in a strange and unknown New York City in the year 1938. It is the seventh day of Hannukkah and it was also Christmas Eve. As Oskar walks over a hundred blocks on Broadway to get to his aunt's house, he encounters various persons who show kindness to him. Oskar remembered his father's last words, "Oskar, even in bad times, people can be good. You have to look for the blessings." Oskar experiences the goodness of men's hearts and not only looks for blessings but receives various blessings on his way to his aunt's house. The book opens with some allusion to "The Night of Broken Glass" or "Kristallnacht" with no explanantion. The non-Jewish reader encounters two other words with no explanantion - "shamash" and "nigundl". At first, the reader may think that the author should have explained these terms but at the conclusion of the story, the reader finds background information and definitions of these terms. An interesting two page spread of a map of 1938 Manhattan showing Oskar's trek of over a hundred cty blocks is also included at the back of the book.I highly recommend this book for children and adults. Not only does one get a new appreciation of immigrants and their feelings in a new world, but the true spirit of Christmas and appreciation and awareness of blessings is also portrayed in this wonderful book. Caution - do not allow the fact that this is a children's picture book deter you from experiencing this awesome book -- older youth and even adults will enjoy the book. This book is suitable for both Jewish and Christian families to read during the holidays.

As an expert in the field of elder law, I can assure you that this book provides all of the details you need to know and the questions you will need to ask as you prepare for aging or are assisting another who needs help in planning or managing the special personal and legal needs that aging poses. Each of the topics, from dealing with limited physical capacity and declining mental skills to making advance plans for decision making for you by others is covered clearly and in appropriate depth. In addition, the book very specifically addresses meeting the costs of long-term care, whether at home or in very-expensive long term-care facilities. Especially important is the thorough coverage of Medicaid benefits and the qualification process. Medicaid can be accessed without having to go broke first; spouses at home are protected and many family resources can be protected with appropriate planning, described accurately in this book. This is not a HOW TO book, there are no forms or checklist. This is a WHAT TO DO book and provides guidance in selecting an advisor, an elder-law attorney, and finding an agent to manage things for you if needed. This book prepares you to look for advisors and attorneys who know what they are doing in this field, a very specialized area. It gets you ready to ask the right questions and be sure that the plans you make and the documents you sign are exactly what you need.My only comment of caution: The book has a number of religious references that I feel are superfluous to the book, no matter how apt or well-intentioned. I think these are personal to the author and would be better reduced or eliminated, no matter how deeply felt.

A must read for anyone fortunate enough to still have their parents and for parents as they age and face their sunset years. After reading Accidental Safari I realized what I thought I knew about planning for the future was just the tip of the iceberg. There is so much more in preparing for aging and providing my family with the information they need that never even crossed my mind. Richard's book walks you through the things you need to know and what you need to do to best prepare for life events. He provides a wealth of information and a roadmap to avoid the pitfalls. I highly recommend this book for everyone whether you're a young couple just starting out or you're already enjoying your retirement years.

Accidental Safari is a treasure chest of answers to questions most of us didn’t even know to ask. Drawing on his personal and professional experience, Richard has done a masterful job of organizing and presenting information to help seniors prepare for their own accidental safaris. This book is also an invaluable guide to help adult children understand the roles they will play in helping their parents deal with a host of challenges they will face in their senior years. Highly recommended!

This book is awesome! We met with Richard and he is a brilliant elder law attorney. I learned a ton reading it and will give it as a gift to many of my clients who look to me for LTC planning. Five stars! If you or a family member is trying to navigate the cost of long term care, please read it.

Richard Tizzano does a great job of explaining estate planning and elder law. He uses stories from his years of experience to help explain how to plan for the future. I highly recommend this book.

This book couldn't have been more timely. My friends and I are in our early to mid 50's and we all have aging parents that are turning to us with questions, needing guidance, and help. I am recommending this book to everyone to help guide their parents on their current journey and to start preparing for our own. Thank you for this invaluable book of knowledge & compassion.

Wonderful book. Full of knowledge about aging, being a caregiver, how to plan for your elder years, involvement of family in your plan, etc. Just a wealth of information everyone needs to know whether you are young or mature. Would recommend to anyone at any age. A must read.

Great book for navigating the aging process from a financial and legal point of view. We are prepared because my son is an Attorney, but this is great for preparing you as you age, written from clients experiences. A must have if you want to stay ahead of any eventuality.
