The fourth and final chapter of the book is about the "legends," including the man to whom the book is dedicated: Irving Newer, the blind avuncular salesman of the famous Wrigley treat, Frosty Malts. What a great trip back in time to honor the guys that sold Cub fans food and drink for all those years.And there were so many vendors I recognized and how nice to see them again.This picture filled tribute shares the story of what being a vendor entailed and the kinship they shared among their vendor brethren and Cub fans.And thank you for the memories of my favorite vendor of all time, Uncle Irv who sold frosty malts in the bleachers in the bleacher bum era.I was a young right center field bleacher bum (and have been a season ticket holder for the last 30 years). We all just loved Irving who sold us cool refreshment during those only day game hot summers. Irving was old and mostly toothless and legally blind and the bleacher bums just loved him. They would shout "we want Irving" chants in the summer heat (the TV and radio guys didn't know what was going on with the bleacher chanting) and Irv would bring frosty malts. We tried to give him exact change as Irving being blind couldn't see to give back the right change. Sometimes he needed a hand going up and down the cement steps. And one special Sunday we had Irving day...we made up hundreds of construction paper buttons that declared "We Love Irving" and for the day there was left/right peace as we all honored our favorite vendor.Thanks for the memories. Well done.

An absolutely wonderful look at a tradition of summer. Going to the ballpark and buying food from the vendors in the seats! This was a wonderful way to earn spending money when I was in high school and college. Many of the vendors go on to other pursuits and many make it a career or life long second job. This is a great retrospective on the colorful lot of Chicago vendors from the 60s and 70s through today. Highly recommend this. Lloyd Rutsky is a vending icon who maticulously chronicled his many adventures and misadventures over the decades with all the great vending characters.

Very interesting. I know a lot of the vendors so it was a fun read. A must for all Cub Fans.

Not really a history of vendors at wrigley. Most of the photos were taken all in the same year, looks like a guy brought his cheap camera to work one weekend and just started taking pictures. Don’t waste your money.

Flower's analysis of the ancient Roman cults of the" lares," "penates," "genius," "juno," etc. is superb. Her investigation into these cults is thorough, insightful, and fascinating. She makes use of all available sources, i.e., art, written materials, archeological findings, and more. For the most part, Ms. Flower restricts her investigation to the late Republic and early Empire, however, she does draw attention to evidence from earlier and later periods. After finishing the book, I had a much better understanding and appreciation for these spiritual practices (the ancient Romans did not have a religion as we understand it).NOTE: The book is not really suited to the casual historian. It is a very detail investigation, and a good foundation in ancient Roman history is recommended.

An account and analysis of the extant evidence for the Roman household cult - that of the lares, penates, genius loci, genius of the pater familias, etc. Literary accounts are linked to archaeological evidence, and the synthesis of information into a more coherent picture of household religious activity (and other lares, such as those of the crossroads and sea) is insightful and brilliant at times . . .

Harriet Flower is a gem of a classicist. As always, her work is insightful and engaging. An interesting read by an accomplished woman.

The author knows his archeology and history, what he does not seem to understand is spirituality - NOT religion. What the lares and the serpents meant and what they brought into the lives of the Romans seems beyond the understanding of the author. I found the book both interesting and disappointing.
