Harry Davis has studied the art of Tasha Tudor for almost thirty years. Paper: Not acid-free. Binding: “Perfect”, i.e. signatures trimmed to single pages, then glued.Photographer Jay Paul has done a fine job capturing the moods of the two very expressive dolls made by Ms. Tudor, “Captain Thaddeus Crane”, (who looks like Henry David Thoreau), and “Emma Birdwhistle”. Also, atmospheric views of objects within the house, and, in a separate section, a selection from the collection in brightly lit photos.I like many aspects of the book design, but object to the diagram of the house with the room of the chapter shaded, useful as it is, taking a whole page at the beginning of each chapter. It could have been shrunk down to take the place of the four tiny unreadable photo details placed next to the restatement of each chapter title, leaving the facing page for another large picture or two. Also, I don’t believe in double-page spreads. The gutter down the middle ruins one’s ability to understand the picture. All of the full-room pictures are two-page spreads.But then, the rooms don’t have much architectural distinction. They are a group of restrained room boxes made to showcase the collection, not a model of a house that might draw away interest for itself. And being so large, already dominating the exhibition gallery as it reportedly did, it couldn’t be given full depth.The title of the book is a bit of a misnomer. It is not really Tasha Tudor’s dollhouse, but The Tasha Tudor Dollhouse At The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center, Williamsburg, Virginia. The house was specially built, with her collaboration, to display Ms.Tudor’s collection of miniatures, and, because the scale of the objects is “one-fourth human size”, not the usual dollhouse one-twelfth, (so the dolls must be nearly a foot and a half tall), the house was too large to go home with Ms. Tudor once the special exhibition “Take Joy! The World Of Tasha Tudor” closed, six months after the opening date Nov. 2, 1996.Harry Davis’s text states, “...over the course of more than seventy-seven years...the dolls have changed residences many times...one doll or another has left...to go with a grown child, perhaps to start another miniature version of a life…” “Since building Corgi Cottage in 1971, Tasha had not had a dollhouse large enough to house the entire collection. She had room settings in built-in cases along a wall adjacent to her bedroom.”Perhaps someday a book will come out detailing the history of Tasha Tudor’s family’s collections of miniatures, dolls, and the houses for them, past and present.The last four pages of the book are occupied by a chronological listing of Ms. Tudor’s books, 1938 to 1999, (she died 2008). It’s not the full biographer’s-researcher’s bibliography you’d find at the end of a biography, that would include her works outside of books, and articles about her in magazines and newspapers, but it is quite a nice thing to have.The text does mention a 1955 LIFE magazine article covering Thaddeus’s first marriage, to “Melissa Shakespeare”, the doll that inspired the book A Is For Annabelle. It may be seen in GoogleBooks. It was in the Sept. 12th issue, four pages of black and white photos by Verner Reed.

Love Tasha Tudor. Enjoyed this book about her dollhouse

The photos of the dollhouse are fantastic. It is a one-quarter-scale version of Tasha Tudor's own earlyeighteenth-century-style home in Vermont. Each room is a double page. Followed by pages of close-ups and descriptions. Wonderfully inspiring!

If you can't own an expensive doll house - get this wonderful book to pour over. Totally great!

Great reference book.

I saw this book in a store in Vermont while on vacation. I knew I wanted it. I have always been a fan of Tasha Tudor, even before I realized I grew up a couple of miles from her Vermont home. This book shows another side of her many talents and keeps alive the past for those to come.

A must have if you are a Tasha Tudor Fan. It is her life in the dollhouse with all the replica furnishings. Awesome.

Larry Kramer is a man with strong emotions, and he has a special talent for translating those emotions to the written word so that they may be translated back to the spoken word by others in the form of a drama without any loss of that emotional urgency. I had the opportunity to see the original production of a stellar example of Kramer's dramatic skills, The Normal Heart, at New York's Public Theater in 1985 with Brad Davis as its star, the original Ned Weeks. It was a shattering evening, and the play struck me with the force of a hurricane.Reading the play for the first time over 30 years later, I'm still powerfully impacted by the forcefulness of Kramer's words. Although the play is set in the early days of the AIDS epidemic, when the number of the dead was still only in the thousands, it does not seem dated in the least. The Royal National Theatre of Great Britain has included the play in its list of the 100 greatest plays of the twentieth century, and the honor is well deserved. Kramer's play speaks to universal values and passions which can withstand the passage of time. Undoubtedly students will be studying this text and actors will be performing this play for many years to come.The Destiny of Me, a companion play to The Normal Heart also featuring Ned Weeks as the protagonist, is a memory play and is not quite the primal scream of the earlier drama. It is set a number of years after The Normal Heart when Ned Weeks has become ill, but, occasionally confusingly, it also is set in Weeks' youth. Despite the muted emotional tones (as contrasted with The Normal Heart), the play still packs quite the powerful punch, a punch sufficiently strong that the play was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in drama the year it was first produced.Because of the ebb and flow in time setting from Weeks' childhood to his present, this play probably works much better when seen in performance than when read as a text. The Destiny of Me requires a reader with a skilled imagination to play out the drama in his or her head in order for it to be fully appreciated. Merely reading and absorbing the words will not do this drama justice. Nevertheless, the effort should be made because this drama, too, is one that is likely to withstand the passage of time. It is a play very much of its time at the same time it is a play that, like its predecessor, takes up universal values and passions. These are the elements of great drama; these are the elements of the two plays by Larry Kramer in this timeless volume.

The rating and description are mainly for the first of these two plays, "The Normal Heart," which is Kramer's angry and heart-wrenching account of the social response to AIDS in the early years of its appearance in New York. A long-time admirer of Randy Shilts' book "And the band played on" I found this to be a condensed, angrier, and more impassioned companion piece; in fact I'm assigning it as the first of three pieces on AIDS in a course I've developed on disease narratives. Kramer's play is the artist/playwright/care-giver/activist's perspective; Shilts (excerpts only) will be the journalistic viewpoint and Abraham Verghese's "My own country" rounds it out with a doctor's account."The Destiny of Me," while doubtless brilliant and troubling in it's own way, did not quite do it for me maybe because it was a much more personal story that I couldn't relate to. I still think it's worth a read.. but am glad that I'd decided on the former for the course. My other choice would have been "Angels in America" by Tony Kushner but ultimately I went with Kramer's play not because as it's closer to the events as they happened. What's really shocking in an eye-opening way reading this play several decades since it was written is the fact that the word AIDS does not even make an appearance once! And yet it's obvious what's being talked about. Anybody interested in human behavior, in sickness & how to cope with the fears that come with uncertainty or in this case, sheer ignorance, should read this and be outraged.

The play is amazingly affecting and reading it without any preconceptions it brought me to gulping tears.Set in the early '80s and bringing to life the beginning of Aids epidemic. It was groundbreaking theater that predated playwright Tony Kushner's Angels in Ameria. The heartbreak, fear different factions of the Gay/Lesbian/Transgender/and Straight communities are explored through the relationship of an activist and NY times writer in a relationship. This play is in production as a movie with Ryan Murphy (Glee, Nip/Tuck, New Normal) as director, playwright Tony Kushner writing the screenplay and Mark Ruffulo (the Avengers)/Matt Bomer (White Collar) playing the couple. Should be a great movie.

I have never read a Larry Kramer play nor have I been introduce to much literature about the AIDS epidemic, but these plays deliver a touching narration on not only historical context but the emotional impact on the characters of this play. The Normal Heart deserves its critical acclamation and our attention as artist and as a fellow citizens of the world. It is not afraid to bring out the dark details of this time and stamp a message that should be heralded in today's time. The Destiny of Me, in my opinion is just as strong of a play, but focuses more on the deliverance of the main characters ego and the stacks of being a human being in this time period. I strongly recommend this play not only as a thespian, but to anyone wanting to understand the AIDS epidemic on a deeper level. I will definitely be reading more literature by Mr. Kramer.

The Birth of Loud is an incredible read! I'm no guitar head, or especially into 60s rock, but this book was a true page turner: Port uses the battle to electrify rock and pop as a way to explore weird old California, the psychology of innovation, and how just a few seemingly small inventions--the solid-body guitar, the electric bass, the pickup and amp--in many ways allowed icons like Clapton, Jimi, and others to express their true selves and potential, which in turn, of course, allowed the 60s to become its true rollicking, counter-culture self. And Port manages to do all this in writing that's engaging on every page--the chapters zip by!

You don't have to be a guitar geek to love this book -- or even a hard-core rock fan. This is a thoroughly engaging ride through the through the 20th Century, from the dusty 20's to the mud of Woodstock, on a wave of music, passion, discovery, triumph, heartbreak and almost unfathomably well-researched visceral detail. It's not just Fender and Paul --though their stories pull you from one chapter to the next -- it's also pioneering women guitarists and bassists that I'd never heard of before, and I'll bet you haven't either.And it's a tale of imagination and invention and their intersection with -- and sometimes collision with -- barriers of technology and economics and race and gender.And it's not just the story he tells as he follows the trail of the progress and influence of the electric guitar on our music and our society, it's the beauty of the writing. Sometimes painstakingly detailed, sometimes lyrical, sometimes jarring, and sometimes ... just magical ... throwing you up against a sentence that forces you to stop, and behold it, and roll it around in your mind, and say "wow -- yes."

The development of the modern electric guitar is the development of our modern pop culture, pure and simple. The story moves at a rapid clip and the author is consistent in his nods to every important character, every breakthrough media appearance, and the effect they had on young music fans. Thanks to the internet, his reader can actually watch the very same appearances on e.g. Ed Sullivan or Ready Steady Go! to see for themselves what the hubbub was all about. Port's relative youth gives him an advantage here; he has the requisite distance to observe what is actually going on. And he is a very keen observer.This book is so good, I'm not just going to read it again ... I'm going to BUY it again!!

I've read many of Ian's writings when he was Music Editor for San Francisco Weekly and loved his humor and his insight. If this book is anywhere as good as his other published work it is exciting and fun! I read the Washington Post Review that came out on the 11th which gives this book a rave review. Can't wait to get my hands on it tomorrow! It's about time someone wrote this history!!!

Enjoyable quick read but somewhat lacking in rigor and direction. Meanders a bit on subject matter and chronology. Skims across the lives of Leo Fender and Les Paul without significant depth but as a result presents a good overview of the development of these two guitar types.Once the book gets to Buddy Holly (the last third), the author appears to be on a deadline and moves too quickly from Holly to Hendrix. A few good stories on Eric Clapton but barely a sentence on Keith Richards and Jimmy Page.And no mention of Peter Frampton's 1954 Gibson Les Paul (see cover of Frampton Comes Alive album) and the incredible story of it being missing for 30 years and returned to Frampton in 2010. Huge miss on author's part.Photos of the actual guitars covered in the book would have been really helpful.

How do you approach Holocaust denial? Do you even dignify that position by bothering to argue it?This is the question Deborah Lipstadt has to answer when historian David Irving brought a lawsuit against her for calling him a Holocaust denier, and a liar. He brought the suit in London because British law required Lipstadt to prove that her accusations were true rather than placing the burden of proof on Irving himself as plaintiff as American law would have done. Lipstadt could have made it all go away by settling -- and there was pressure on her to do so, even from parts of the Jewish community -- but she chose to fight the suit because not to would have been to imply that it was okay to deny the murder of millions of Jews (and others, though that doesn't actually enter into the narrative.)The account of the trial shows clearly how frustrated Lipstadt was with the process, with the fact that her legal team would not allow her to testify, nor would they allow Holocaust survivors to take the stand. She didn't understand either position and butted heads with her lawyers on more than one occasion. She took exception to her barrister treating a visit to Auschwitz as a forensic visit rather than a memorial one. Her responses were utterly understandable and based on emotion, and that is why her team made the choices they did.  The law doesn't deal in emotional arguments, it deals in facts. The weight of tears cannot be measured against the weight of evidence. Lipstadt and her team didn't have to prove that millions of people died and that Hitler was ultimately responsible, they just had to prove that in misrepresenting facts and changing words from primary documents, Irving lied. They didn't have to prove that anti-Semitism and racism are wrong, they only had to prove that Irving was a racist and anti-Semite. And only a painstaking examination of fact could ever prove those things.The book is a powerful one, particularly in our time when racism, anti-Semitism, and all manner of ugly, troll-like behavior is being enabled at the highest levels of government. Irving's behavior feels familiar to this contemporary American, a man who cannot admit either mistakes, or wrong-doing, and who is not only a Holocaust denier but who, on the night when the verdict was given in Lipstadt's favor, went on British television to talk about how, in the end, the decision was actually quite favorable to him. It wasn't, it was devastating to him, but he was either incapable of understanding that or he simply refused to admit it. When asked if he would then stop denying the Holocaust, Irving replied, "Good lord, no."I should add that before I wrote this review I also watched the film, and found it excellent. I think they're complimentary, and one enhances the other. Either way, if you're at all interested in the case, one which I did find I remembered from the late 1990s, the book and to a lesser extent the film, is well worth your time.

I will try to keep my remarks about this book only. Professor Lipstadt does an excellent job of reviewing the evidence submitted by her own defense and David Ivring' s evidence. She does so in words easily understood by those of us not exactly in tune with a legal system difficult, at times, to understand. She withstood this assault on her life and profession and came out as an example of dignity and truth in the field of historical academics. To be perfectly honest I fail to understand how this trial ever had to take place. I can only assume that David Irving believed he could intimidate the professor and she would run scare. And why was there a trial when Irving's writings so clearly espoused exactly how he felt about anyone he considered inferior to himself, a white male. The truth was in black and white long before Professor Lipstadt wrote her book. An important decision, a must win, but unfortunately those deniers and revisionists are still very hard at work. If the world would stop giving them a stage perhaps they would cease to espouse their hate and bigotry.

A fantastic book primarily comprised of schadenfreude and competence porn. Detailing Lipstadt's libel trial after naming a British "historian" as a Holocaust denier and antisemite, the book manages to keep the reader interested even when the results of the trial are never in doubt. This book is about the journey rather than the destination. Despite the lack of any real tension, I loved it. Reading about Lipstadt's team as they research, strategize, and present their case made for great reading. It's a book about smart people being smart, teaming up to shame someone who rightly deserved shaming, and it just works.

Deborah Lipstadt’s meticulous memoir of the libel suit brought against her by Holocaust denier “historian” David Irving will draw you in and weave its way into your thoughts. Her detailed recounting of the leadup to and the conduct of a five month trial in the British Royal Courts is fascinating and never tedious. So much to think about her, and so much to learn. Historical methods, the nature of truth, the complexities of freedom of speech and thought, the law of libel, courtroom procedure and trial,strategy, all set against the background of the Holocaust and Nazi Germany. Can’t wait to see the movie.
