As the title suggests, this history is brief yet entertaining, informative with a sarcastic wit mixed in that makes the written word a joy to read. The descriptions must be written in an efficient style covering the most important aspects of critical periods of time. An example of the authors wit is the categorizing of the four Georges (1-4) as less then effective Kings concluding with a London Times quote referencing George IV upon his death with 'there never was an individual less regretted by his fellow creatures then this deceased king'. The efficient telling requires direct opinions or fact telling and again the humor is captured in the third chapter title, 'History Worth Remembering'. The book includes numerous political cartoons from the period and direct quotes on the times or the individual subject. The book includes a wonderful summary of the 42 monarchs, many who died violently, and lineage charts showing the key family descendants, a bibliography and index. Regardless of the humor, the author covers the subjects extraordinarily well with seriousness in most cases such as the decline of the British empire but then there is his comment on James II whose actions aided the problem of his elimination and succession, 'The solution owes much to good luck and James Stuart 's disinclination to stay and fight for his crown'. The author captures a real feel for the delightful history of England while educating the reader at the same time.
This was a very entertaining book to read, which is saying a lot in regards to reading history. Mr. Smith is obviously fluent with British culture and history. His observations are pithy, to the point and laced with a dry humor. I didn't want to go deep into English history and Mr. Smith effectively covers the highs (and lows) of Britain and its people. This is a great overview of Great Britain that doesn't get mired in dry as dust minutae. Bravo.
A very quick read of the high (and low) points of English history. Informative but certainly not an in-depth study, and certainly addresses its title. Good and fun read.
Quick enjoyable read. Unfortunately little about the Cromwell years. I guess the 1650 thru 1660 didn't happen. God save the King.
Assumes a ton of prior knowledge about English history. Written with words I have to look up often and I went to GRADUATE SCHOOL, so I'm what is considered "educated", and you have to wonder if the author was drunk while writing it as it doesn't flow well and jumps topics unexpectedly. Wish I hadn't bought it.
An excellent introduction for the novice of English history. There are a few gaps but nothing serious. Elizabeth I could have had a fuller narative and the recent monarchs could have used a more interesting approach. On the whole we discover that most of the English monarchs were less than brilliant rulers or leaders. A good book for the novice and it should prompt anyone to read more history from other historians.
very entertaining
At times irreverent,at times insightful, always well written. The brevity of text compels the author to simplify and avoid many necessary details. Even so, a good read on a transatlantic flight to orient one to a country with a glorious history.
