In our modern world the common man believes, as a French exchange student once informed me, that science has shown us that there is no need for a God much less a savior because nature has created everything.In defense of this common belief, many scholars have sought to prove that the Bible as we know it is a book of fables copied from other historical myths into an inconsistent, incomplete group of humanly devised books which only the most insecure people need bother with.In this day of instant, around-the-world communication, what is proposed by one, is shared hundreds or thousands of times until many take the proposition to be factual.Whenever I discuss such matters, I always insist on the author to produce “primary†sources. Unfortunately, that is too much work for most and too revealing of inaccuracy to others.In this book, Strobel presents a very painstakingly analysis of the fact and fiction regarding the authenticity of the Holy Bible. He quotes source after source going back to ancient primary sources time after time to prove that the Bible is the most historically proven book of all time.Strobel often takes the oppositional position when questioning Biblical scholars, challenging their ideas until the false arguments are completely disproven. One example which was new to me was the idea that other religious myths predate Christianity and the Bible “borrows†from those myths. Strobel demonstrates that there are only three instances that predate Jesus and those do not come close to being a parallel of Jesus birth, death as a sacrifice for our sins.It is obvious that essentially all of the antagonists of Christianity would do well to actually perform scholarly research rather than repeat what they have read on anti-Christian blogs.The narrator did a very good job of keeping the listener engaged although as with many books, I would have preferred that the author narrate the book himself.I was given a free audio version of this book for my agreement to review it but this has not influenced my personal impressions of the book.
I have politely listened to the arguments and teachings Strobel addresses in this book. I never had my faith shaken by any of them because of the relationship I have with Jesus. Having the current attacks against the truth of the Bible laid out and meticulously answered is like the line in the musical Fiddler on the Roof. After Tevye and his wife decide they love each other, they conclude the exercise they went through to reach that decision doesn't change a thing. "...but after twenty-five years it's nice to know." Supporting and verifying the truth of scripture may tear down the walls of pride and resistance to the gospel for some, but knowing Jesus is still an act of faith. I recommend this to all.
I'm a big fan of fiction, Christian and otherwise (Peretti style, NOT Amish, or love stories, or that genre) so I wasn't sure how interesting I would find a non-fiction book like this. I was pleasantly surprised. I won't say it's a real page turner that kept me up nights, but the subject matter, credentials of the interviewees, and the interviews themselves were very professional/professionally done, and in an interesting, thought provoking, and readable fashion. If you've walked through Barnes & Noble anytime in this century, you'll see books talking about some weird "gospels", the enlightenment taught by gnosticism, how Jesus was supposedly married, how He supposedly didn't really die on the cross, etc. etc. Before you buy into any of those theories, please read this book. The extremely well qualified individuals interviewed by Lee Strobel will debunk all these myths, and provide solid evidence as to why the theories don't work. I highly recommend this book to anyone who seeks the truth about the real Jesus, not some construct created by fertile imaginations.
"The Case for the Real Jesus" is one of several books by investigative journalist Lee Strobel that defends Christianity. Having read "The Case for Christ" when it was first published, I remember being unimpressed by Strobel's efforts. Frankly, I can barely remember the content of "The Case for Christ," but I decided to read his book, "The Case for Faith," a few years ago. I will admit that I didn't even finish that book because I found it weak in one huge way. Strobel appears to have come to conclusions before writing the book, & he purposefully only interviews people who will back up his views. He does attempt to offer counterarguments in the forms of quoting or paraphrasing what opposing scholars think, but he never gives these scholars an in depth treatment. He uses the same methods in "The Case for the Real Jesus."So skeptically I began to read "The Case for the Real Jesus." I do not claim to be a New Testament scholar in anyway, but I have read books from liberals such as Elaine Pagels & Bart Erhman. I was actually very biased in that I refused to give conservative scholars the time of day, & I would only entertain liberal theories. I am so glad to say that I truly enjoyed reading "The Case for the Real Jesus." While Strobel is not a New Testament scholar, all of those he interviews have impeccable credentials & logically lay out their cases. I found myself very much agreeing with their conclusions. Of particular interest to me where the chapters devoted to non-canonical books (such as the Gospel of Thomas) & the evidence for the Resurrection. I was also quite taken with the chapter devoted to the transmission of the New Testament.Strobel's book really just skims the surface, & I would recommend it as a starting point for people who, like me, have never read any conservative scholarship defending Christianity.
