From the Author
Writing Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents was quite the experience! I devoted each chapter to a different continent, plus Central America. My process for creating the book was to go on an adventure; write the chapter; and then head out again. In all, my travels spanned three-and-a-half years, and my writing and research time totaled more than twelve thousand hours. Here's where I went during my travels: Peru (the Amazon Rainforest), Argentina, Australia (Queensland), Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon Territory, and Northwest Territories), Antarctica, Europe (Spain, France, Switzerland, and Andorra), Malaysia (Borneo), and Africa (Zimbabwe). Since I was essentially writing the book "live," one of my trepidations was that a trip might turn out to be boring. If that happened, would I have to subject my readers to a snoozer of a chapter? Fortunately, something exciting and magical happened on every adventure! Something else magical has happened: Cool Creatures, Hot Planet has become a book with a life of its own. After the print edition came out in 2007, it won six national awards. That led to a live, multi-media version of the book, called Around the World in 90 Minutes. I have been performing Around the World in 90 Minutes at colleges and other venues since 2007. My show is still going strong. If I'm in your area, I hope you will check it out--you'll have a blast. Finally, December 2012 marked the release of Cool Creatures, Hot Planet on Kindle. A Kindle release wasn't part of the plan, but after purchasing a Kindle Paperwhite for myself, I fell in love with the format. I found that I could read much longer without eyestrain and loved that I could read late into the night, with the lights out. Encante Press did a great job of reformatting my book for Kindle, and it still includes all of the photos people ooh and aah about so often. Whether you purchase the print or the Kindle version of Cool Creatures, Hot Planet, I thank you. And I hope to see you at one of my live shows soon! P.S. If you bring your book to my show, I will be happy to sign it for you. If you have the Kindle version, I usually have bookmarks or other goodies with me that I can sign for you instead.

A delightful, extremely well-written and laid-out romp through the continents. It is evident that the author loves and respects all creatures with maybe two exceptions: His house cat and Mildred - the traveler from hell. Maybe three, if you count George W. Bush.I expected slithery, slimy, crawly things-and got them-but in a way that was not only educational but fun and actually page-turning. Marty Essen not only looked for venomous snakes (his passion) but imagined himself (in Never-Cry-Wolf-fashion) running with the caribou way up north in the Klondike. To boot, his intrepid, water-loving wife was game for anything. Though I had some doubt when I read that "she ran into the cold river, wallowed in the mud until her backside was all black." Oh, wait! I must have been distracted. Kate was the dog! There are some tender moments with Annie (also a dog), as well as Deb (that's the wife).A wonderful reading experience. Don't let the high page-count scare you off. Traipsing through the thicket of seven continents does take time, and patience, and love for our planet; as well as courage.
I just finished reading Marty's book on Kindle, and I loved it! There were several terrifying moments that really made me admire the couple's courage. Marty's humor made me laugh out loud in some spots, and his writing style is a pleasure to read. I could never contemplate most of the adventures they undertook, but he made me feel like I was there--able to see, hear, and enjoy it all without the risk and the danger. Even an arm chair adventurer like me could enjoy the experience of a lifetime through Marty's delightful book. The photos were marvelous and were an integral part of the journey. Thanks so much for a wonderful ride!
I was keenly disappointed in the lack of pictures by this photographer/writer. The writing was excellent but there were a few pics in the front of the book and none in the body of the book. I expected a visual as well as verbal travelogue and I did not get it and so it is for that reason I give the book just 4 stars. I suggest to the author to pull the book and add way more pics to it, I know that you have them after traveling for 3 years to write the book. His liberal political insights were an annoyance as I am a very staunch conservative, but not so much that I did not enjoy reading the book. Great job on the writing though.
Nice writing style. A pleasure to read. Lots of detail so you could go there, too, if desired. If these locations appeal to you, then this book is well worth the read. The author is clear he wants to see animals; I enjoyed the education he provided and hearing about what he found. I also appreciate the author's attitude, respect of animals and values. These are fun adventures, an easy read, very personable and humorous.
Marty Essen always wanted to be a herpetologist (snake scientist for us laymen), but he became a hard-working entrepreneur instead. At the age of 39, he decided he was missing something, so over the next several years, Marty and his wife Deb undertook an adventure exploring all the continents, with an emphasis on the wildlife of the world.Essentially this is a travel book describing the couple's explorations of our planet, from the Amazon and Antarctica through Belize and Borneo to Zimbabwe (despite the State Department's warnings). It includes the societies they encountered and man-made attractions like the castles of Spain, but the real focus is on the myriad creatures they saw, animal facts, and animal descriptions, especially lower-order creatures, such as "a large white spider that looked like it were made entirely out of pipe cleaners and a caterpillar that mimicked a mound of gray belly button lint."What made this an especially delightful read were the personalities that came alive in the narrative. I knew I was going to like Marty on Page 13, when he finds a huge spider in the bathroom in Belize. A (expletive deleted) would have killed the spider; a more sensitive person would have said, "Wow" and then ignored it; Marty names it Spike and collects tidbits to feed it! A little later he asks the resort manager to request of the guide, "Please tell Arturio that he's not to kill any snakes we find."I enjoyed the newby travelers' reactions as Marty and Deb took their first trips and experienced truly foreign environments for the first time. And anyone who has been on a group trip or stayed at a small resort can identify with the description of fellow visitor to Antarctica Mildred, whose sulkiness and ill humor no doubt earned her the vote for Person I'd most Like to Put on a Floating Iceberg. Deb and Marty, however, roll with the punches when they encounter some of the less attractive sides of travel. For example, when Marty becomes covered with penguin poo trying to get a photograph, he creates a song "I am Guano Man" to the tune of Black Sabbth's song Iron Man. This is a guy who could make any trip fun!So what is there not to like? Marty and Deb began their travels at the beginning of George W. Bush's administration and continued during the early years of the Iraq war. Marty is NOT a Bush fan, to put it mildly. He mentions Bush and the war numerous times, including the fact that many foreigners he met along the way asked about the war. This might have been an interesting topic, e.g., "How People Around the World Viewed the US during the Bush Administration", but it did not fit the overall theme of Cool Creatures and was not developed enough to be any more than an annoying distraction. That small quibble aside, if you enjoy travel or wildlife or just an interesting real-life adventure, you will probably like Cool Creatures, Hot Planet.PS A nice bonus is that the Kindle edition of this book is lending-enabled. But for $3.99, let your friends buy their own copy!
Marty did a super job of taking you along to every continent, every mud puddle, everysighting of every animal, bird, snake, and camp site..Read the book, you will have fond memories of every continent you visit from your comfortable recliner.
Greatly enjoyed this book. Take a pleasant relaxed trip to exotic locales with Marty and Deb. Like traveling with a quirky favorite neighbor. You will develop new appreciation for spiders and especially snakes. A delightful appreciation for, and love of, the natural world, comes through bright and clear.
A great read. The personal, casual tone let me feel like I'm vacationing right along side the author and his wife! If you wish you could go on exotic adventures, grab this book and set out on a whole lot of them!
