I have been sailing all my life. I have owned 5 different sail boats from 18 foot hobi-cats to my 50 foot Gulfstar. My wife and I are currently planning our retirement escape to Mexico on our Gulf Star 50 ketch. But my wife has been reluctant about sailing down the coast with just the two of us. This book has changed her view. There are simple techniques for coming in to a slip single handed that are just brilliant. No more jumping off the on to the dock. It is hard to get my wife to read sailing instruction books because she is just not interested. The video clips for each section of the book made all of the difference. Now, my wife is very confident she can manage to drop the line over a cleat. This book is not filled with fluff but get right to the point. This book should be a mandatory course for every sailing captain before they are allowed leave the dock.
This book is described as a single (and short) handed sailing guide. Unfortunately almost all the content is general sailing information and tips that are essentially generic sailing information - if you have done ASA classes you'll have most of that info already. There's other information that may be interesting but seems strangely out of context - for example, Chapter 1 on ropes and the composition - why is that important for the context of what the guide purports to be is not quite clear. Overall, it was very disappointing to me, as a new sailor looking to be guided in how to sail single handed, as the preface seemed to indicate that it would be exactly what I was looking for.
I enjoyed the book and picked up a lot of good information. The author is British and uses British colloquialisms throughout the book sometimes making it a little hard to understand for a person living on the side of the pond but well worth the read.I would suggest that you buy the hard copy as well as the Kindle version because the diagrams are much easier to view in a book but you still need the Kindle copy loaded on your phone so you can watch the videos that come free as demonstrations of techniques taught.
This boat is off the charts excellent. I've had my sailboat since 1995 and I still consider myself a knob when it comes to being able to truly handle the boat by myself. Duncan's book is filled with "doh! That's blindingly obvious, why didn't I think of that." For example, ever watch people go back and forth trying to "hook'" a mooring ball? Giant pain with lots of yelling. Duncan's simple solution of essentially tying off one end of a heavy line to the forward cleat, bringing the line back and flipping (holding the other end) over the ball, it sinks and then pulling yourself to the ball as the line catches the mooring line underneath; is just such a moment. The book has embedded videos so you can take the iPad/Kindle on the boat and do what he shows. Brilliant book.
This book is a gem! I've read the ASA course books and numerous books on sail trim and racing techniques over the years, but this book fills in the gaps and is essential reading for all sailors. Not only is it a joy to read but it also has QR Codes that can be scanned by a mobile device to access videos with practical examples of the material in the book. There are useful tips on almost every page that you can start using right away. I'm particularly interested in short-handed sailing - for which this book is very helpful, but a lot of the material is applicable to larger crews too. I wish there were more books like this one!
Great tactics for sailing single handed or taking out friends who are new to sailing. Duncan is correct when he says that your confidence in handling the boat on your own is key to taking pressure off the rest of the novice crew or passengers.Knowing you can handle the boat on your own under various events makes the voyage more enjoyable for all on board.I especially liked all the embedded / linked videos- especially sailing in circle (you can teach this to anyone right away so neither of you needs to panic in a MOB situation). I also liked the Rustler's Hitch video- classic story!
Excellent book. Wonderful videos. The videos were a challenge to get downloaded for viewing when buying Internet access. A bit of hacking. A shame content providers are more fearful of having content pirated than delivering product to buyers. I bought Kindle and Google Play version, hoping to get access to videos offline. Finally hacked my way into Vimeo to download.
Unless you are a seasoned liveaboard or a regatta racer (and even then) you will learn important lessons in this book. Stress free is what we want, that is partly why we seek the ocean waves in the first place. The author has a thorough understanding of what the major "stress" issues is and how to make them go away.
