I bought this after taking a copy out from my local library. I wanted my own copy because it is a seriously good reference source as well as an excellent tool for actually learning to play Blues harmonica. I like that it is entirely focused on Blues harmonica (I don't want or need to learn how to play "Oh, Susana"!). The author really knows his stuff as a teacher and is extremely good at explaining how to do, as well as what to do. There is now a massive amount of you tube video on the subject of how to play Blues on harmonica, some of it excellent (I like Adam Gussow's Modern Blues Harmonica videos, many good ones free on you tube) and some of it not so good. This book keeps me on course to learn Blues harmonica. The audio disc is great because I can pop it into the player in my car, listen and "groove in" the lessons to my memory.By the way, if you want to play well, you do have to play a LOT! One primary "secret" to learning harmonica is that it takes plenty of practice to groove in the muscle-memory you need to fluidly play the riffs and licks that make up harmonica blues. The good news is that its FUN!
Lots of very thorough reviews have already been written for this book. I mostly agree with everything already said in those in which four or five stars were given to this book. There is not much then that I could add. This is in my opinion a very good, comprehensive, enjoyable and useful book for those who like me would like to learn to play the Blues with a harmonica.The kindle version does not come with a CD, but I managed to download the audio examples from http://wiley.mpstechnologies.com/wiley/BOBContent/searchLPBobContent.do (I just had to type “blues harmonica†in the search box for book titles and a downloadable zip file with the mp3 examples was made available for me).Apart from this one, I bought other several books (in kindle format and printed as well) that attempt to teach how to play a harmonica from the basics. This one is becoming to be one of my favourite and I am finding it to be most useful so therefore, I do dare to recommend it.
I'll start with the good, since that's what you probably want to read. This is a great book for introducing the harmonica to a new player, particularly one that wants to play the blues. It tells you about anything you could want to know about the instrument itself, and has plenty of music theory so you have some idea what you're supposed to do once you can make not-too-unpleasant sounds. Read it, and keep a good harmonica in your pocket at all times. Practice, practice, practice. Then, add a serious music theory book to the library. Then, practice some more.Like most "for Dummies" books, the humor needs to get trimmed back a bit. Sometimes I feel that these books would be the greatest thing ever devised if they could cut some of the more corny one-liners out. Hard to read books with your eyes rolling.The harmonica is a superb instrument (I've been a violinist/violist for over 20 years), and I always keep one in my pocket. My 3-year old is getting pretty good at it, too. Great for all ages. This book is a pretty good intro.
I am by no stretch of the imagination a musician, but even I find this book understandable, now it does at least for me, being a no talent such as I am, take more that one perusing and studying of the same thing oftentimes. The good thing is that once it hits me, whatever it is that I happen to be studying, at a particular time, it become abundantly clear. I am glad I made the purchase of this book. Now if I can learn to play just a little.
Im very pleased with this book! So far- it's easy to read- informative and easy to learn from! I only wish I had had it 30 years ago! If you are wondering if you should get it- I highly recommend it!Thanks!
Excellent book for learning. I like the ability to pan mp3 audio and practice with the Audacity app at different tempos. Take your time on chapters 5 through 7 - this is the core of learning in my opinion if you are a beginner in blues harmonica.There is a nice in depth chapter on note bending. Again, take your time as there is a lot of good material to practice and enjoy playing. Get a good harp too.
I am really impressed. This book far exceeded my expectations. I read the book reviews after I bought it wondering of others liked it as much as I do. The trend seems to be that those who bought the Kindle version are not happy because they don't have the CD. Those that bought the paper version with the CD are happy.I am not a beginner harmonica player and I know some things about Blues music. I thought that this book might be too basic for me but that is definitely not the case. Actually it is exactly what I dreamed of having. This will be a great study for me. I highly recommend it. The author did a great job.
The "Dummies" format makes it much better than other blues instruction books. It is a comprehensive reference: great instruction for beginners, and detailed topics for the advanced player. My only caution is page 214, top half of page. Check this against other sources, including Winslow's "Harmonica for Dummies".
