The book has a hefty focus on the mental aspect of finances, which I personally think is the most important. There's a good balance of storytelling and practical advice.It's not an investment book or advanced level retirement planning guide or hardcore tax strategy book. It's a solid book on how to go from not knowing much about your money to totally killing it. It would be comparable to Ramit Sethi's I Will Teach You To Be Rich, if you like that book, you'll love this one too.Highly recommend.

This book has some great tips for young adults with no clue how to manage finances. The first 8 chapters deal with some pretty basic concepts. However, if you have the basics down, there is very little new information in here. Additionally, the way the book was written is a little pandering-- we get it, Millenials like brunch. As a Millenial, I found that it was a little too kitschy and basic. That said, it does contain sound financial advice, and I did learn some new information from the two chapters on investment and retirement.

I knew that pre ordering this book would be a wise investment and Broke Millennial has not failed me. About 1/2 way through the book and have already implemented some lifestyle changes to create a more sustainable financial future for my family and I. Really looking forward to this author's next book because I know she'll write relevant and interesting information.

Erin Lowry is an entertaining author whose appeal reaches across the generations. Parents will enjoy her references to the manner in which her parents helped her understand finances, siblings will side with her sister deserving a cut when selling donuts, and everyone else will love her practical ideas for saving and investing. I'm a nursing student going into my senior year of college. My first choice of books is definitely not a finance book. I know I needed to get my act together if I wanted to be successful with my money. I am completely blown away by this book. Erin Lowry is amazing. She truly knows how to connect with her audience (even the ones who don't have the first clue about finance). I talk about this book all the time and have incorporated so many of the things she talks about doing into my life. I am already starting to see the benefit of buying this book. I recommend to any age group but especially younger adults! Love it!

Unfortunately, I do not agree with the majority of reviews on here. I found Lowry's voice to be conceded and unappealing. She consistently tried to down play what she was saying by putting a joke in parentheses after a serious statement often making it seem as though she was doubting herself. Lowry is, from what she's written, phenomenal with money. For someone like me, who is not so great with money, I felt dumb for not doing what Lowry stated should have already been done. As a millennial, I find this to be an unnecessary expense.

I highly recommend this book to any financially struggling twenty-something. I'm in my late 20's and have never quite found my footing financially - it always seemed like it was one thing after another whenever I tried to start saving money. After reading this book, I made some major changes and finally feel like I can breathe and like I can afford my car payment, groceries, and fun dinners out with friends and family (I no longer have to pretend like I'm more anti-social than I actually am). I still have a lot of work to do, but I truly appreciated the way this book laid everything out. It was easy to understand with good references to being a millennial. I appreciated when the author laid out the best way to do something, but recognized that as a millennial, we'd probably rather do it a different way - she encourages you to go about solving and saving the way that you'll succeed best at it. I learned a lot about myself through reading this book and feel like financial goals are finally in my horizon.

I've read my fair share of personal finance books but it wasn't until I picked this book up that I realized how very few of them are geared for folks in their early 20s, recent grads and young professionals.Two things stand out. One, it couples sound financial knowledge with advice on how to reorient your attitude towards money in a more productive way, especially with partners and peers. Two, the advice on both debt and investing were extremely relevant to where I am financially.An example of excellent framing: Erin suggests having a great credit score as financial insurance to give you access to the best credit products if you find yourself in a financial bind which you intuit, but reframed my relationship and understanding of debt and my own credit score.Can't recommend this enough!

I’ve finished this series in 24 hours and just want to read it again!Mattie and company are back for a fun ride preparing for the pinnacle of a high school experience PROM! A little mystery, a little drama, and a lot of witty one liners makes this book a fun way to spend an afternoon.

It was si refreshing to read a book that was both romantic and funny without any of the sex stuff. I had been trying to find a good, clean romance book and this was it! I also read the first book, ugh so good!! Thank you so much! The develop of the characters, the sarcasm, wit and lessons were all so worth the read! Couldn't put it down!

Great characters....great plot. Even better than a John Hughes film. The characters have developed more. I really hope we see what college is like . Great read.

This sequel is as fantastic as the original. A nice clean teen romance. Well edited. Laugh out loud good times.

A cute, quick YA read. Loved the continuation of Mattie and Jake's story. The promposals are hilarious and entertaining little additions to the story. It's a great book for teens about friendships and standing up for yourself.

Just amazing! I have questions that will most likely be answered in the next book but overall? I super enjoyed it and I didn't want it to end. Love the world Sariah created.

I’m new to adult coloring so I look for inexpensive books in case I don’t end up staying interested in it. I liked the cover on this book and in my opinion it contains a lot of coloring pages for the price. I would prefer to see some examples of the pages inside, but reviews were good so I took a chance on it. I’m pleased with the size of the book and it has a good variety of animals and other attractive images. Includes complex patterns which will keep me busy for quite awhile. I haven’t started on this book yet but I’m looking forward to enjoying it!

A little over 1/2 of the book has a blank line thru them. Pictures are nice with various levels of complexity. Although the line is a little disappointing I assume not all the books are like this & it was a limited quantity that had the error so for the cost & the fact I can color thru/over the line it was still worth it.

Nice pictures. This was a gift and I'm sure they'll enjoy it.

My Granddaughter is a Harry Potter fan and loves owls. She liked it.

7 year old started to color right away - loves it

Paper is cheap and colors bleed.

Love this artist. She makes very nice books.

If you enjoy "Weather stories" on TV, these will all make for fascinating reading.PS In the Oregon reference I am talking about the death of CNET editor James Kim, who left the relative safety of his car trying to get help for his family, and the three climbers on Mt Hood that perished shortly after. You will learn of countless expeditions that people insisted on undertaking because they were already there, even though the weather has changed drastically.

If you're interested in national parks this is a very good book. It shows you you can't take things for granite, when you're in these parks you have to be aware of your surroundings. Example Yellowstone the Bears, moose, elk, and other types of animals this is not a petting zoo these are wild animals. However some people don't realize this and then they get into trouble.It tell stories of how the national Park Rangers assist visitors to these parks and how danger at times their jobs can be.

Kudos to the author as there was clearly a lot of research done for this book. I liked it. I ended up skipping large parts as it's actually too much info. This isn't a negative comment, as each person would value different sections of this book.

Interesting. Some of the sar cases are not sufficiently discribed for the reader to get an idea of what happened.

Did you ever wonder about the kinds of rescues and accidental deaths that can happen in a National Park? This is a great book. It is thick, has pictures here and there, and documents events over decades of what kinds of peril people can get themselves into and to what length the park workers and military will go to to rescue or recover bodies and people. Fascinating! A MUST read!

Fascinating stories of people lost in the National Parks. One of my favorites was a guy who was lost in Yosemite in the early 1900's. He sent a message to his family in New York City by releasing his Homing Pigeon.

This is a tough one to review. I have read nothing else like it. It is a memoir of Terese Marie Mailhot. Although it is a short read it is not necessarily a quick read. Mailhot grew up in an abusive and dysfunctional family on an Indian reservation. As often happens she continues to punish herself in abusive relationships as a young women. Her book is a brilliant account of her struggles to free herself of the effects and limitations of her past. The combination of her raw pain expressed in such poetic beautiful essays is what separates this book from the rest. Although it is difficult to even imagine the suffering, the book is also filled with hope and light as she uses her writing and education to step toward understanding and living her own truth.

Wow, what an absolute triumph. It took me two days to make it through this book. I found myself needing to come up for air as I finished each chapter. I was forced to consider and regard the women who raised me: my grandma, big sister, my mother. Then there’s the gravity of the realization of all that life will force my daughter to endure. Thank you for putting pen to paper, Terese. Thank you for this book.

I have never read anything like this. Mailhot's poetic prose created an alluring veil for a horrific truth. Her words twisted in on themselves in a way I've never experienced. Although this memoir is short, I found myself needing to read it very slowly. Raw, powerful, brutal, damaged, beautiful.

Teresa captures the beauty and horror of ptsd, abuse, and a truly traumatic memoir with her poetic writing. This book spoke words and memories that I was uncapable of speaking for myself or authentically communicating how a life like this can affect someone. This was truly one of the best books I've read in quite some time

But I did and I would recommend that everyone would enjoy it. The life that this woman led and is living is inspiring to anyone who take the time to read her story.

Every sentence is gut wrenching or heart opening or endlessly contemplative in its simply stated ocean encompassing depth.I’m afraid to read something so true too quickly. It must be nibbled and chewed. Not because the reading is dense or difficult. Just the opposite, it sings so concisely and beautifully that it cuts, it burns into your heart. It threatens to shatter me, so I savor it, the way it's changing my life.This is the journey of your words and your heart on this page. It is too much for who I am today. Every paragraph brings me to a closer understanding of life and myself. I need only the smallest bite to keep me churning my own story and guts for days on end.A gift to the world. Thank you.

And that's fine. This book isn't meant for everyone. It's style doesn't suit the general populace. But those of us that "get it" can truly appreciate this written work. Some people say that it is poorly put together. That they don't know what the writer was trying to get across. It's not what they expected. In some ways, I want to say that having expectations of this book to fall in line with other memoirs will set you up for disappointment.I do not identify on a personal level with the author, though I understand it to a certain level. I understand that I don't understand. I often look for insight into the mind of people who struggle with mental health. I want to understand their personal reality, because it differs from mine. As I read this book, it reminds me of my own journal. When I write, knowing that no one else will read it, I am very sharp. I can be accusatory and self-deprecating. I am criticizing and cynical. That is the way I write for myself. When I compose something with the expectation that someone else will read it, I craft my words together very differently. I have a whole other narrative when I know there will be an audience of some sort. I pay more attention to the message I want to get across, and mask the internal turmoil. The author masks nothing. The author writes as she self-reflects, and sometimes that means skipping time frames. Though it may not come across as linear story telling, it is linear in time in moments of self-reflection.If you create something that everyone will LIKE, you will have created something that no one will LOVE. And I love this book.

This is a brave, infuriating work on many levels. It is also illuminating about aspects of Indian culture (her words) and family dysfunction, human dysfunction. Proceed with caution because it is a hard emotional read, but Mailhot's writing makes it very worthwhile.

I have always been a tall-ships buff, and really enjoyed Lucy Bellwood's account of serving aboard the _Lady Washington,_ as well as her stories about such things as the meaning of sailors' tattoos (they aren't just random ink; they once served as a sailor's CV in the old days), the myth of "walking the plank," scurvy and a pre-Perry visit by the original _Lady Washington_ to one of the out-islands of Japan. I'd love to see her do a graphic-novel introduction to sailing ships in general, covering things like types, various rigs and the advantages and disadvantages of each, and terminology.

Having crewed tall ships myself (and already being a fan of Bellwood's work), I got what I expected from this delightful volume and more! Her vivid illustrations, singular humor, and thorough research ensured that from the moment I opened it, I did not once set it down until I had read it entirely. She captured perfectly the enthralling love story that can happen between an inexperienced young person and the sea, and she imparted on me new knowledge of both scientific and historic natures that added context and richness to my previous understanding of maritime lore and tradition. Sailors or nautical aficionados from all walks of life and age groups are sure to enjoy this book and feel compelled to share it with others who love art, education, and the sea.

Lucy Bellwood writes a fantastic half-"how to become a deckhand" guide and half-sailing history book, and it's great. Her art is charming, and her expressions with her faces are so good. Great for the history information but also for a little-known career path of sailing!

This was so much fun. Even if you never plan to go to sea, you would enjoy reading this book, and seeing what life was like on the great sailing ships of years past.

A lighthearted book with amazing illustrations. Lucy Bellwood also incorporates some education into her stories.

I found this book quite illuminating. It's an interesting exploration of a perspective on theology that was pretty foreign to me as someone raised in a monotheistic household and culture.

It is not often you find a book that speaks to you and helps you understand yourself and others in simple language with real examples. This book is required reading for my Pagan Theology class and we are reading different chapters through the "course of the course".It is not dry like many of the other academic works but at least for me holds my interest and SO positively explains a spirituality that often stems from a life very different from the mainstream (i.e. summers in the North Country, hunting, growing your own food, encounters with wild lands and wild spirits). The author speaks from experience and relates personal stories. Regardless of your own spiritual path, you are likely to find reading this book to be an enriching experience.

This is a well written book from the perspective of a polytheist. You get a lot of details that would be missing had the book been written from an outside perspective. Most books on religion are dry but this one isn't. The books pretty thin but there is a lot of information packed into those pages. The book gives a survey of some polytheistic religions which is handy because you know where to look for more info on how various religions handle a given need. For instance, charity, temple building and maintenance.

This book by Professor Jordan Paper merits reading. However, the author failed to meet his own academic standards by omitting both footnotes (at times sorely missing, ex. gr. references to religious texts) and a glossary. The index is incomplete, leaving out for example Prof. Max Müller who is mentioned in the text. From an academic who refers to Western science as one of his own major mind-sets one expects more.Prof. Paper's critiques of Abrahamic, patriarchal religions are succinct and to the mark but he did not sufficiently underscore similar tendencies in 'polytheistic' religions of patriarchal civilisations like ancient Greece. Alas, he did not follow his own conclusions in writing the book, ex. gr. to use 'thealogy' instead of or with 'theology' and by referring to "A Polytheistic Theology" in the title whilst stating explicitly in the text that 'polytheism' is a pejorative label invented and applied to all forms of Heathenism by proponents of Abrahamic religions.Prof. Paper emphasised the experiential, 'subjective' nature of religions in general and non-Abrahamic ones in particular. He weaved his own experiences - and biases - into the text. Frequent amongst North Americans who have never lived in Europe, this north-western peninsula of Eurasia appears in the book like a large Christian mass much like North American, in spite of its very high degree of differentiation into some 40 officially recognised languages, many climates, countries, regions, cultures and ethnic groups. Prof. Paper forgot to mention that Christendom's victory over Heathenism required several centuries of bitter warfare and was not essentially accomplished until the conquest of Saxony by Charlemagne's Frankish alliance at the end of the 8th century CE.The author mentions some bridges like The One - The Many and Unity - Multiplicity being indispensable to each other as shown by Angels and sometimes Saints in Abrahamic religions, although their adherents usually display little to no interest in such bridges to Heathenism. Another bridge is the direct divine inspiration claimed by many heathen authors for some of their writings, ex. gr. by Three Female Muses for Hesiod's "Theogony". Could Greek Heathens rightly claim to be a 'people of the book'?The author often illustrates the extreme imbalance of Abrahamic religions in their preference, clearly confirmed by the masculine linguistic genders, names and attributes of their 'God', for the Active-Male over the Passive-Female, both in principle and in manifestation. This tendency, however, was already marked by paternalistic civilisations like ancient Greece and Aryan India. One can indeed scarcely imagine Christians praying to "Our Mother Who is in the Earth" or Muslims to "Allat", even if She were not considered part of an all-female Trinity.Prof. Paper deserves special credit for his explicit critiques of New-Age and feminist exaggerations, ex. gr. of parts of Wicca, that are indeed often contrary to the self-understanding and practices of traditional forms of Heathenism. Hardly surprising in view of Wicca's establishment almost exclusively by white Anglo-Saxons of Christian protestant origin.The author frequently referred to traditional Chinese religions to which he has direct family links. Alas, he did not mention by what portion of the population such religions, including for example family alters for Ancestresses, Ancestors and other Divinities, are currently practised in China.Prof. Paper's 'thealogy' remains somewhat ambiguous in respect of 'good-bad' (rather than 'good-evil'). His attribution of 'bad' (defined apparently according to conventional human mundane well-being) at least in part to hazardous events indicates perhaps a reluctance to directly comprehend forces known in some traditions as 'malefic', represented chiefly by Mars and Saturn.

I think there ought to be more books on polytheism, so I tend to be generous in rating them. And Jordan Paper makes some good points about polytheism and the ways in which it is superior to monotheism.The author begins by explaining what he means by "theology." Theology to him can mean "to theorize from within a particular tradition." But that does not suffice to define the term to me.We find out that the Goddesses and Gods are fairly diverse. There are sections on ancestral spirits, and divine ghosts.Paper explains that polytheism is natural to humans. And that the Gods and Goddesses tend to be hailed or adored, not feared. While the term "worshipper" may be appropriate for many monotheists, the more common term for polytheists is "devotee." Paper explains that the polytheistic deities "tend to be more companionable than a single, absolute, monarchial deity."The author explains that for polytheists, there is no concept of "heresy." There simply is no single religious dogma to be denied. That's not true for monotheists, who often confuse their dogmas with empirical truths. And that can lead to a very destructive fanaticism among monotheists. In addition, we can see that the major monotheistic religions tend to favor Men over Women, and can favor one race over another as well.In my opinion, we humans are varied and fickle and thus need to worship a big bunch of Goddesses and Gods. And Paper seems to imply this as well: he points out that if our prayers to one deity are not answered, it is normal to consider switching to some other deity.One obvious aspect of modern monotheism is its stultifying authoritarianism. And Paper does explain that polytheism is useful, enjoyable, and exhilarating. Still, I would have appreciated more of a discussion about the lack of authoritarianism in some forms of polytheism.Since Paper does discuss the problems of monotheism in leading us humans into conflict, I was hoping he would draw some conclusions about the future of polytheism. One possibility is that the future will be much like the past: the polytheistic religions that correspond to the human spirit will be defeated by a few monotheists at gunpoint. But I think it is more likely that such impositions of the religions of others will eventually be rejected by society, that we'll return to the Gods and Goddesses, and that They will return to us.
