The first thing I noticed when I received my copy was just how nice it was, it has a very "classic" feel to the cover and it represented with alot of thought to detail and presentation. It has a nice thick binding and was quite sturdy which is appreciated when you have an image heavy book with heavy slick pages. I hate when the binding is poor and your book basically breaks open and tends to flop as your pacing through the pages. I have not had any issues with the pages sticking as one of the other reviewers had, and I have read through the entire book so not every printing has that issue I am happy to report.Kirk's collection is broken up into genre (toys, posters, art etc.) and by the decade. They are represented quite well, great photos and each has a comment from Kirk himself about either how he came across the piece, its rarity or personal thoughts. There were alot of pieces that I had never seen before and as a horror fan myself, that was a real treat. It also introduced me to some classic films I have somehow missed along the way and alot of toys that I've never seen.The interview with Kirk was a great edition, he talks about how he became an avid lover and collector of all things horror, why he is drawn to a particular decade or monster and his favorites, he also ties it into his music as well; you get to see all the guitars he had designed based on his favorite monster films.This is a very nice book, you do not have to be a fan of Kirk's or Metallica's to enjoy this at all, as a matter of fact, this is about the other love in Kirk's life: Horror Business. So I would recommend this to a horror fan, a book lover, a collector of classic films and tv monsters. I was quite impressed with it overall.

I've been a Metallica fan since I'm 15 and Kirk is one of my favorite guitarrist of all time. The time I knew that he had a book with all those stories about horror and the details about his guitars I knew I wanted to have it.The book was delivered in excellent conditions. It arrived to Peru from Amazon itself. It has hardcover, looks very resistant and the paper feels that has a lot of quality. It overpassed my expectations and definitely it's going to be a wonderful add to my personal library.If you are a fan of Kirk and classic horror movies, you must have this one.

I did not know this book existed, and saw it on some horror website. I have been a fan of Metallica since 1983 when I bought Kill 'em All, at 14 years old. I was also a "monster kid", and had all the Fangoria's and Famous Monster issues that I could get my hands on. I have loved horror films ever since I can remember.This book is awesome and Kirk has an amazing collection. These are some of THE best photo's I've ever seen! The quality of this book is A+!!!!!The only thing that sucks is I do not have close to what he has, and what little I did have was lost to Hurricane Katrina, so this book can help me fantasize!!!If you are a Monster Kid, you need this, even Metallica fans may like it. I am sure the price will go sky high once all these are gone, so pick one up!

Kirk Hammett is one of my favorite musicians, and I'm also his same age. Like him, I grew up with Creature Features on tv, and seeing some pretty intense horror films at a young age, 'cause my Dad loves horror, too.I love horror SO much, I've performed as a zombie in flash mobs and Michael Jackson Thriller tributes.This is a gorgeous book with super-cool toys, masks, vintage props, and beautiful movie poster art.Kirk wrote all the captions himself, revealing the gleeful little boy side of him,and his passion for these items is contagious.What surprised me the most about the book, is that it's also an in-depth look into Kirk's inner psyche,and if you're a hard-core fan of Kirk, and of Metallica's music, like me, you learn just how much inspiration his collection gives him as a musician, and it's really fascinating.There's even more in his collection, that didn't make it into this book.I also like his decision to have the book only available in hard copy...Kirk wants the reader to have a tangible, physical experience with this lovely book.I showed the book to my Dad one day, and my Dad poured over every single page, he really enjoyed it, too.He's a semi-retired newspaper editor, and was really impressed with the quality of the book.

If you are a monster kid, a fan of old monster movies, or especially a collector of monster posters, toys, props, etc... this book is simply essential. Beautifully photographed and presented, this is an amazing collection that is extremely broad and deep, filled with classic movie posters and props from the early days of horror cinema through the 70's. Toys from the classic "monster kid" era of the 60's and 70's feature items ranging from the extremly rare and normally never seen to the common but classic. If you collect vintage monster toys, you probably have at least a few of the things Kirk has also collected and shows in his book. I had to order a second "file" copy because the first is going to be in tatters from reading it over and over.

If you, or a loved one, LOVES movie monsters and collects them, you really should get this book. Kirk Hammett has a top notch monster memorbilia collection second to none. Props, lunch boxes, dolls...you name it! It's clear that he has a passion for monster movies and has taken a great deal of care in collecting everything that he can. The pictures in the book are very well done and you can really see all the details in the items he owns. Truthfully, the book is just a lot of fun.

Had to purchase this book for my negotiation class, while the information is quite technical and meticulous it provides great information and In depth information on how to reach your desired solution. While boring at times, generally provides interesting and well thought out examples. Highly worth the read for classes or for everyday life

The title of Fisher and Ury's book is Getting to Yes - Negotiating Agreement without Giving In. It's a case where the title clearly lays out what the book is about. In Getting to Yes the authors present, step by step, how to find your way to a win-win solution that helps meet your goals while at the same time preserving the relationship so that future negotiations also go smoothly.This book was the assigned textbook for a college course I took on negotiation, but it's one of those fairly rare cases where the material that's useful for a college course is also immensely useful for off-the-street people in a variety of situations. This book avoids complicated jargon and long, droning background chapters. Instead, it plunges into helpful information to assist people in negotiating for a new car, negotiating issues with their landlords, and all the many ways we all negotiate for our position throughout life.Negotiation isn't just for union leaders trying to avert a strike. All of us negotiate each day as we try to juggle our many roles. We negotiate with our co-workers over assignments. We negotiate with our family members over chores. In an ideal world all of those discussions would go quickly, smoothly, and with as little strife as possible.Getting to Yes provided numerous helpful examples which made their points more easy to understand. It is so true that people tend to remember stories where they might not remember dry text. When I think about this book I do remember several of the stories clearly, and those help to represent the points the authors were making. The stories help remind me to focus on the issues when negotiating and to look for objective standards to work with.The information presented is wonderful, and immediately useful in life.On the down side, this is a new version of older material. The authors chose to keep the initial book in its original form and then add on additional information at the end. I appreciate for historical reasons why they wanted to do that. However, from a fresh reader point of view, I feel they should present an integrated whole which most clearly presents the full information. The way the book is laid out currently, you have to go back and forth to find all information on a given topic.Also, the format is not laid out for easy reference. If they went more for a "dummies" style with an easy to scan layout, graphs and charts to quickly find and scan, and quick end-summaries, that would make this more useful as a reference book to keep on a shelf. Right now if I had an issue to handle it would be less than quick to grab the book and find the answer. I would have to wade through the book to figure out where to get the support I needed.Still, I do recommend that everyone read this book at least once, to build their skills in negotiation. It's something we all have to do!

This book has been around for quite a while and is vaunted by many as THE book on negotiation. I, like many others, am unconvinced. If you have never negotiated anything in your life, this is the book for you. It's a great primer, but it's far from all-encompassing. The authors admit that it is not meant to cover everything, though. It teaches what's known as "principled negotiation," which is a non-adversarial style. It's particularly useful for business deals and personal conflicts, since it emphasizes mutual problem solving and de-emphasizes taking positions, thus allowing everyone to "win."On the other hand, anyone who has successfully negotiated even the most minor of deals (i.e. haggling), won't find this as useful. In order to be effective, you have to convince all parties to accept the premise of principled negotiation. If they don't the whole system falls apart. Furthermore, if you are in an adversarial proceeding (lawsuit, arbitration, etc.), this is fairly useless. In those proceedings, the other party either doesn't care whether you "win" or actively wants you to lose. If you come up against a manipulator, the practices in this book will prove to be more hindrance than help. I had to read this as part of a law school class. To put it mildly, other aspects of the class were far more useful than this book.Bottom Line: a good starting point. Just don't make it a stopping point.

I first read this in 1983, when my husband was in his first year of law school. I've remembered over the years and tried to apply some of the principles that i learned in my personal and professional life. I recently attended some professional (non-legal) training, and one of the facilitators was a lawyer who led a discussion about how to negotiate when there is disagreement. As he spoke, I recognized the principles as the same ones I'd read in Getting to Yes so long ago. At the end of his presentation, he referred to this book. I decided to buy a new copy and read it again. It has been updated, and the new material is a great addition. Still a very handy tool for personal or professional negotiation.

The book has opened a world of opportunities that I could not see before. It is practical. Everyone can benefit by reading it. The method that the authors describe can be used for any negotiations, from small to big: settling differences in views with your colleagues, talking to your family members, not giving in when a client asks you for an unjustified discount, when your house contractor doesn't want to do the proper job, managing a hostage crisis and even negotiating a nuclear arms deal with another, perhaps narrow minded country. I wish I have read this book 20 years ago. I would have handled many critical situations differently. I highly recommend this book for everyone to read. Moreover, if you have children who are ready to fly out or recently left your nest- make them read this book because it may change their lives, in a good way.

A must read. It helps with every day negotiations. It will save you a lot of emotional grief. It will help your marriage. It will help your work relationships. It helps your remove a lot of conflict in your life and a great stepping stone to peace of mind. I wish I had read it earlier in my life.

I rented this book online. FIRST its expired BEFORE the date I rented it through. So I paid AGAIN despite having originally paid to rent it until my semester ended. WORST yet every single time I opened my kindle to use the E-book, it would say my preview had expired and I would have to resend the ordered rental to my device. I would do this multiple times before it would work. When trying to do homework on deadline, this is incredibly frustrating and detrimental.

Nice textbook. Needed for one of my classes. It is very big so a 2 inch binder is needed to store the textbook. After a while, some of the pages will need hole protectors as the holes began to rip. Overall, it worked fine for my class.

I have taken a lot of classes. This book is just so generic text book it's boring. It Is also ridiculously heavy. There are pictures that the authors use to ask questions to engage critical thinking. They are so tiny it's hard to even look at them and see the details they are describing.

I personally can't stand textbook prices and I always try and investigate if the "old" version will work for my class. This book is all but identical. Some of the chapters are re-worded but that is all. I would buy this over the "new" version aka a different picture on the front of the book.

This book has good content, but the Kindle format was very hard to navigate. When i read through a chapter, I had no idea how long or short it was, or how much further in the chapter I had to go, unless I reviewed the material before i read it. I disliked that unless I was on the chapter page with all the links I could not jump to particular sections of the text. I would have liked to have the "master chapter outline" outside of the text box in a navigation bar, for ease of use.I also disliked that the content was organized by "locations" instead of correlating pages to the physical text book. I disliked it because a book this size there are tens of thousands of "locations" that are in this book.The images that were in the book were in the Kindle edition, but all the charts and graphs were very small and low resolution, and some were barely readable. I would have liked to zoom into the images, to get information and detail, more so than the zoom feature they have for the text. Additionally, the bookmark feature was difficult to control and arbitrary. If I book marked a page, the book mark would only reference the first line of the page, not necessarily the content i wanted to reference. Plus I found it frustrating that neither the highlighting feature nor the notes feature did not work on this book.If you are getting this for a class, which I bet you are, I wold buy the electronic version from another company, with PDF style page references and more navigation control.

I’ve opened the book about three times, and it’s alresdy coming apart. Some of the pages did not print correctly and were stuck together, which tore as I separated them. I couldn’t return the book since I’ve begun my “mini-Mester” class, and need to read daily, and cannot waste time waiting for another to arrive.

Over all it is an easy book to read, until you get to sections that talk in circles. I also do find that there are some biases in the book, weather they were just overlooked in the editing process or are intentional to press their opinion.

Amazon book rental is the way to go. Very reasonable prices.

In many ways, the reading of this book reminded me of the writings of Louis Kahn: both explicit and metaphorical reflections on the inner complexities of the apparent simplicities of daily life. The selections of almost inscrutable photographs, extreme close-ups of sections of Zumthor's house, act as as another way to explore the intensity of the artist's and his art's soul. All along the book, and in a very poetical manner, phrases seem to be left hanging unfinished, as for one's own mind and sensibility to put together the pieces of and intriguing and inspiring puzzle that remains open and to be developed by the reader. While the voice of a master is always heard, the message is delivered with the subtlety of his work, as for the reader not to feel forced into a way of thinking, acting or perceiving, but invited to stay with eyes, mind and all senses open to enjoy the pleasures of life and the possibility to contribute to them by one's own minor but never meaningless actions.

Reading this book was like reading a long-lost secret manual of"How to become a 21 century Samurai..." I guess that sense of delusion rises because the content and the tone of book has this (quasi) idea of medieval perfection achieved through a repetition of hands-on practice. "I do not work towards architecture from a theoretically defined point of departure, for I am committed to making architecture,," writes Zumthor.Moreover, a reader, at the back of her/his head, has those powerful images of Bath House in Vaals (tour de force of phenomenological experience) that intensifies the delusion. One would think, 'Zumthor must be a man from Mars to build architecture like that' and 'his writings must be a strong sleeping pill.' Usual Suspect !He writes extremely clear with extremely simple terms. This slim book tells us how an architect of such originality thinks and experiences daily life. It's a great pleasure to find out what kind of music (Mozart's piano concertos) zumthor listens; what kind of artists (Beuys and Merz) he likes; what kind of film he watches (Ettore Scola's film Le Bal); what kind of books (Calvino) he reads; and what kind of sayings ("the hard core beauty") in the radio show captivates him. A former cabinet maker, his book is carefully jointed, just like his buildings. Anyone who found this book fun/inspiring to read should also try Alvaro Siza's "Writings on Architecture"

Zumthor's _Thinking Architecture_ and _Atmospheres_ are iconic additions to the lexicon of architectural theory. Zumthor is a humble giant, and his concern with the phenomenological experience of the user, as well as with the performative aspects of building, point the way to a twenty-first century architecture that is kinder and more responsible than the architectures of the twentieth. This is a must-read for all architects and designers, and if you find yourself thinking Zumthor to be ho-hum or you don't agree with him, I ask you: As an architect who do you serve? If your answer is one rooted in a wider ethic, Zumthor will resonate with you.

This book is an excellent intorduction to Zumthor's architecture. This book makes us think about what is essential in architecture, why and how you go about creating the "real" presence of built environments (at least, we get to appreciate Zumthor's perspective on it). Most importantly why that matters for us as well as for Zumthor. We think we knew and we think we understood. But, reading this book, I realized how much I have forgotten and how important it is to remind ourselves of some of the significant and yet, simple truths in thinking of built environment. He describes these in plain but powerful words. For me, his view on the "real" presence of architecture was very appealing. In seeking 'factual truth' in architecture, Zumthor explains what matters to him in his consideration of "specific" contexts and issues. This book gives us some clues about why his buildings exude such extraordinary aura and how they might have been conceived. It is not about big abstract theories no one understands. It is not about complicated geometry or formal exuberance so many contemporary architects seem to be obsessed with. It is a relatively short but, very powerful book. It's highly recommended. Peter Zumthor, one of the real masters in architecture today talks about his desire to design a building that takes on its own life afterwards. To him, the real presence of architecture doesn't require any rhetoric or any further explanation. His architecture is not about form-making and certainly doesn't stem from digital processes. It is not about rhetorical/ critical diagrams as a point of departure. It is not necessarily about sustainability. His architecture doesn't seek to be showy and spectacular. It seeks to "belong", belong to the context, site, and surroundings, therefore to our presence. Creating the new but only in a way that enhances the existing. From another perspective, it is about "place-making": making a place/ spatial conditions that become part of our physical presence in this world. His pursuit of the real and the essential seems solidly grounded in modernism. And yet, he is capable of going beyond the capacity of modernist architecture the way we are familiar with. It has something to do with his focus on "atmosphere"-making. To him, making spaces always comes with a certain concept related to atmospheres. He explains his understanding of "atmosphere" in architecture in another book. Zumthor may be called one of the pre-eminent architects of the "New Modern", which differs from post-modern. It is unexpectedly refreshing to read his words. Just like anything else in life, doing basic things well is important and if you do, that alone could take you quite far. Such an admirable architect.... He once said 'Life is too short to compromise'...... Good for him. I wish I could be like that.....

This book single handedly got me through Architecture school. It taught my how to get into the design thinking mentality and to be able to converse with those around me. Written very thoughtfully yet complex, it really forces you to understand the core values of Architectural thinking and to learn how to apply those.

A heart and mind-opening must read for children and adults alike. Powerful and well-written, experience the world of a people who, despite sorrowful experiences, stand tall and strong in answering the call to duty. The Diné rise above petty prejudice to serve as proud marines creating a code that could not be broken and prove to be indispensable in the Pacific Theater.The author carefully treats the combat zone so that you get the idea of the horrors without the gore. This makes it a valuable resource in the classroom. So many themes to capitalize upon--integrity, pride and appreciation for the Diné and other Native American cultures, friendship, dealing with prejudice--against the enemy and against others, locus of control, family, etc. As a teacher and a parent, I highly recommend Code Talker. In fact, I will be investing in a class set; my own money, of course, because Code Talkers is so powerful in creating a space for awareness--the kind of awareness that can change paradigms forever.AUDIO VERSION REVIEW:Code Talker is poignant to read, but Derrick Henry's recording transforms the novel into a spellbinding fireside evening at "grandfather's" knee. Thankfully, Henry must be Diné or can speak the language well enough to cause my friend, a fellow Diné to say, "He is Navajo." The authentic pronunciation of Navajo words and phrases increases appreciation for why this was America's best hope to create an unbreakable code.If there is any book one should listen to rather than read, this is it. Actually hearing the sacred language elevates the experience of Code Talker, for it is no longer just a novel, it is now an oral history.

I am a genealogist and a history lover, and I found this book immensely engrossing. Even though it is written for a younger audience, there is so much detail and food for thought, not only about the war and the jobs of the code talkers, but their experiences evoke tangents of thought regarding racism, prejudice, irony, persecution, and stereotyping, to name a few. I truly enjoyed being able to talk a walk through the eyes and experience of the young Navajo, Ned. It is a great book that I cannot wait to share with my children.

I got this for my 10 year old for a 5th grade historical fiction book report. I warned him that the beginning was supposed to be extremely slow to get through, but that then the book turns out to be awesome! Sure enough, he was complaining and whining about how boring the book was, but I made him stick with it and woohoo, paydirt, he then couldn't put it down! He thought it was great! !!!

This book was extremely interesting, well written, fast paced (not frantic, but certainly never boring), and very readable. I enjoyed it so much, and I learned a lot too. It gave such a great picture of not only what the Navajos went through during World War II, but also a great glimpse into other areas of their lives. I also learned a lot about the Japanese culture at that time. It was gripping and compelling. It handled difficult subjects very well - giving a good picture of atrocities without ever being graphic or disturbing. I would highly recommend it.

This is an amazing novel based on the real-life Navajo Code Talkers of WWII. My daughter's 9th grade read this as a class, and she found it extremely interesting. We also watched the film Wind Talkers, but personally we both feel the book does a much better job of engaging the reader and exploring the complex relationships between the Code Talkers and their history and culture's past treatment at the hands of the government. The main character, Ned, is incredibly proud of his and his fellow Code Talkers service in defense of the US and the allied forces. It is definitely an uplifting story, but one that doesn't try to diminish the pain and difficulties faced by the troops during wartime. Highly recommend this book!

One of the most interesting facets of World War II in my opinion. This is an amazing true story. Never will there be enough praise for the code talkers. They were instrumental in saving the free world. This is a fantastic book that every American citizen should be required to read. I am in awe of these American heroes.

I had a hard time putting this book down. It's an easy read about a fictional Navajo man who was chosen to be a code talker in WW II but is based on actual events. Well researched & well written, it will keep your interest from beginning to end ... and you'll learn a lot about the value of what the real Navajo code talkers offered to a country that had historically treated the Indian people poorly. I highly recommend this book.

Needed a fiction story for a high school freshman who dislikes reading. This book kept my student's interest thanks to the easy to read prose and the mix of historical accuracy and fictional characters. If you weren't familiar with the WW2 Navajo Code Talkers, this is a great introduction to their fascinating story.
