The Diné rise above petty prejudice to serve as proud marines creating a code that could not be broken and prove to be indispensable in the Pacific Theater.The author carefully treats the combat zone so that you get the idea of the horrors without the gore. This makes it a valuable resource in the classroom. So many themes to capitalize upon--integrity, pride and appreciation for the Diné and other Native American cultures, friendship, dealing with prejudice--against the enemy and against others, locus of control, family, etc. As a teacher and a parent, I highly recommend Code Talker. In fact, I will be investing in a class set; my own money, of course, because Code Talkers is so powerful in creating a space for awareness--the kind of awareness that can change paradigms forever.AUDIO VERSION REVIEW:Code Talker is poignant to read, but Derrick Henry's recording transforms the novel into a spellbinding fireside evening at "grandfather's" knee. Thankfully, Henry must be Diné or can speak the language well enough to cause my friend, a fellow Diné to say, "He is Navajo." The authentic pronunciation of Navajo words and phrases increases appreciation for why this was America's best hope to create an unbreakable code.If there is any book one should listen to rather than read, this is it. Actually hearing the sacred language elevates the experience of Code Talker, for it is no longer just a novel, it is now an oral history.

I am a genealogist and a history lover, and I found this book immensely engrossing. Even though it is written for a younger audience, there is so much detail and food for thought, not only about the war and the jobs of the code talkers, but their experiences evoke tangents of thought regarding racism, prejudice, irony, persecution, and stereotyping, to name a few. I truly enjoyed being able to talk a walk through the eyes and experience of the young Navajo, Ned. It is a great book that I cannot wait to share with my children.

I got this for my 10 year old for a 5th grade historical fiction book report. I warned him that the beginning was supposed to be extremely slow to get through, but that then the book turns out to be awesome! Sure enough, he was complaining and whining about how boring the book was, but I made him stick with it and woohoo, paydirt, he then couldn't put it down! He thought it was great! !!!

This book was extremely interesting, well written, fast paced (not frantic, but certainly never boring), and very readable. I enjoyed it so much, and I learned a lot too. It gave such a great picture of not only what the Navajos went through during World War II, but also a great glimpse into other areas of their lives. I also learned a lot about the Japanese culture at that time. It was gripping and compelling. It handled difficult subjects very well - giving a good picture of atrocities without ever being graphic or disturbing. I would highly recommend it.

This is an amazing novel based on the real-life Navajo Code Talkers of WWII. My daughter's 9th grade read this as a class, and she found it extremely interesting. We also watched the film Wind Talkers, but personally we both feel the book does a much better job of engaging the reader and exploring the complex relationships between the Code Talkers and their history and culture's past treatment at the hands of the government. The main character, Ned, is incredibly proud of his and his fellow Code Talkers service in defense of the US and the allied forces. It is definitely an uplifting story, but one that doesn't try to diminish the pain and difficulties faced by the troops during wartime. Highly recommend this book!

One of the most interesting facets of World War II in my opinion. This is an amazing true story. Never will there be enough praise for the code talkers. They were instrumental in saving the free world. This is a fantastic book that every American citizen should be required to read. I am in awe of these American heroes.

I had a hard time putting this book down. It's an easy read about a fictional Navajo man who was chosen to be a code talker in WW II but is based on actual events. Well researched & well written, it will keep your interest from beginning to end ... and you'll learn a lot about the value of what the real Navajo code talkers offered to a country that had historically treated the Indian people poorly. I highly recommend this book.

Needed a fiction story for a high school freshman who dislikes reading. This book kept my student's interest thanks to the easy to read prose and the mix of historical accuracy and fictional characters. If you weren't familiar with the WW2 Navajo Code Talkers, this is a great introduction to their fascinating story.

Yes, I hate it. It's just such a bad guidebook and almost unreadable in its hipster pretentiousness. Yes, the word "hip" appears repeatedly throughout the book, along with appearances of "mega-hip," "gob-smacked," and "cred." If you consider yourself a hipster, I suppose you might find the book useful; for all others, there are better options. The information is brief and, as I know from past trips, can steer readers the wrong way. If all you want to do is skip across Eastern Europe's most popular tourist destinations and visit "hip" cafes and clubs, this may be your book. If you want to see the best art museum in Zagreb, it's not in this book. If you want to sleep through one of the most scenic train rides in Europe (Bar to Belgrade), that's exactly what this guidebook advises you to do ("take the night train"). Amazingly, one of the author bios at the end of the book states that while he writes for Lonely Planet guides, he "finds real satisfaction in digging up stories in places that are too remote or quirky for the guides." Once upon a time, that was Lonely Planet's aim--to share that information with readers. At least with this guide, it seems the aim has changed to sending readers to all the popular places and keeping the gems to themselves. Honestly, you will find much more useful information through online search engines and Youtube videos. Please note that one common complaint of the previous guide was that information was incorrect or out of date and had been for some time before the guide was published. Potential buyers should also note the page count: At 480 pages, this guide is shockingly small for half a continent. For comparison, Lonely Planet's guide to Italy is 976 pages, and Rick Steves' Eastern Europe guide is 1100 pages.

I preordered this book and looked forward to its arrival. I'm sorry to say that I found it very disappointing.The first thing that struck me was how slim it is. I had recently bought Lonely Planet's Southeast Asia on a Shoestring (2016), which dedicates over 970 pages to 11 countries. This book has about 480 pages for 21 countries. So roughly half the number of pages for about twice as many countries. I compared the coverage of Russia, the largest country in the world, with the other book's coverage of Singapore, a tiny city-state. Russia got 25 pages; Singapore had 33.There is a jarring disjunct between the labelled maps and the sights described in the text. For just one example, the entry on Kyiv describes a grand total of 5 sights under 4 headings (p. 413). Kyevo-Pecherska Lavra, St. Sophia's Cathedral, and Maidan Nezalezhnosti each get a single paragraph, while another is split between Andriyivsky Uzviz and St. Andrew's Church. Meanwhile, the map of central Kyiv (pp. 416–417) and its key (p. 418) show 9 marked sights. Five of these — The Bulgokov Museum, Desyatynna Church Ruins, Museum of One Street, National Museum of Ukrainian History, and Peyzazhna Alleya — get absolutely no description. This book cannot stand on its own. Almost anything in here that interests you must be supplemented by information found elsewhere.There are other weird choices. The introduction to Albania (p. 42) has an oddly vicious tone: "So backward was Albania when it emerged blinking into the bright light of freedom that it needed two decades just to catch up with the rest of Eastern Europe." Yikes. The map of Croatia (p. 110–111) would be helped by the addition of ferry routes, since the country's coast is an archipelago. I don't know what typographical gremlin is responsible for the spacing disaster on the key to Tallinn's map (p. 167), but it should have been exorcised before going to print. And although published at the end of 2017, the authors seem unaware of AirBnb. I know that some European cities are fiercely opposed to the platform, and some tourists avoid using it in those places — I don't know what the situation is in any of the cities described here. I appreciate the handful of hostels and hotels listed for each location, but I fear that the company whose finger was once firmly on the young traveler's pulse has put on some very thick mittens.One final gripe: the Amazon description touts "Colour maps and images throughout." Not exactly. As is common with Lonely Planet guides, all of the photos are found in the book's very first section, and the maps are "colour" only in the most technical of terms. They're blue. After page 40, blue and black are the only inks used. I don't mind this at all — it's typical of many guide books — but the description on the site is misleading.This book would make a good gift for a luddite looking for a superficial glance at a bunch of cool places, but for the rest of us, a few cursory online searches will turn up more information for a much lower cost. I really wanted to love this book, and I feel guilty leaving such a harsh review, but I waited for it for months, and it is so frustrating as to be almost useless.

I only give this book a 1 star because you can not give it anything lower. I am a long time Lonely Planet user, and I am REALLY DISAPPOINTED in them and this book. It is just SO SMALL and is completely USELESS! There is absolutely no reason to buy it at all. You should get anything else, because it has to be better than this book!

Far too short to cover such a region. LP Caribbean or Central America are twice the size. This is a pocket book with each country's capital, largest church, national museum, 2 restaurants and 2 hotels and that is it.

I too am fed up with the relentless "hipster" bent of this book and some other Lonely Planet titles Namely their Bulgaria and Romania guide which suffers from the same problems.An overwhelming bias towards Hostels over Hotels, Vegan and vegetarian over all other food and the "party" culture of travel over important cultural and historic sites and events has diminished LP greatly in my view. Some important balance needs to be restored. I bought my first LP guide in the mid 1970's before my tour of duty in the Peace Corps. Their Africa book was thin, all drawings were hand drawn, no photographs (Even the Red cover was hand drawn). But all in all that was a better book than this one. I have been a loyal buyer, user and reader of LP guides for more than 40 years...from the very beginning. So I do have some perspective on this. I must say that with the sale of LP By Tony and Maureen to the BBC LP guides like Eastern Europe and Bulgaria and Romania have gone completely downhill.

I did not think there would be much information, but holy cow, this book is worthless. Only about 7 pages per country. Its not enough to be worthy to be taken with. Most cities I want to travel to don't have any information whatsoever.

I thought I would get some helpful information when I purchased this book. I cannot even call it a book because it was more like a brochure. It gave absolutely NO helpful information, that I didn't know already when I reviewed the phone online before purchase. It took me 5 minutes to go through the entire thing. It was garbage, and that's where it ended up! Don't waste your money purchasing this. It is definitely not worth a dime! It would be going back, if I had not thrown it away!

Switched from a Samsung Galaxy to iPhone SE. Wanted to know the tips for iPhone but this book is a PR piece for Apple and contains no useful information. It is a ripoff. Unfortunately there is no "Dummies" book for SE so I purchased this. Must have been written by an advertising person, not a tech. Save your money.

This book is pretty much useless for a new apple user. It has some information regarding the features of the phone, but nothing regarding setting up the phone and being able to utilize the features. The part on the cover of the book - "The Ultimate Tips And Tricks to Mastering Your iPhone SE Today" is a total misrepresentation. If one wants help, don't waste your money on this book!

My wife recently bought an Iphone SE and the title seemed like just the thing to help with learning how to use it. From that perspective this booklet was totally useless. Perhaps for a sophisticated user this pamphlet might have some information, but certainly not for someone new to Iphones.

I have never reviewed a product before at any time, but I am so infuriated by this total waste of money that I want to help prevent others from wasting their money too. There was not one single item of interest in the entire book. It taught me nothing and did not provide any answers to the many questions I have about my new iphone. I believe Amazon should discontinue this item immediately.

This book is very, very basic and didn't tell me the details of using my iPhone that I needed.

Very authentic. If your serious about discovering regional Spanish cuisine this is an excellent choice. A great read even if you don't cool.

There's a scene in the DVD, Spain: A Culinary Road Trip, where Gwyneth Paltrow is introducing Mario Batali to one of Spain's foremost chefs, introducing the Spanish chef to Batali as "a great Spanish chef" and Batali to the Spanish chef as "an Italian chef" whereupon Batali quickly corrects Paltrow in a slowed, perturbed cadenced, "a great Italian chef" -- causing Paltrow to first pause and then repeat semi-perfunctorily, "a great Italian chef" as Batali blushes in either anger, embarrassment, or a hot Spanish sun. Well, unquestionably, the chefs in this collection of superb recipes are "great Spanish chefs" from distinct regions of Spain. As much as I lauded From the Source: Thailand, I must say that this Spanish book was equally impressive. There is literally a color photo of FOOD on every page (not people smiling with missing teeth sans food in the pictures) and many of the dishes are either new to me (and I own many wonderful Spanish-cuisine cookbooks) or were done in a novel or superb way. Again, the lists of dishes are too plentiful and magnificent to list any favorites. They are phenomenal, and I invite each of you to doubt my words and run to a bookstore and browse through this book. Your local library is a great place to start. I guarantee you will buy this tremendous collection of Spanish recipes created by real Spanish chefs from Espana. And again, my comments in my review on From the Source: Thailand (about American born chefs descended from and cooking the cuisine of their ancestors, and Americans who can masterfully cook the cuisine of a foreign country despite not belonging to the country whose cuisine they specialize in) still holds true here. But why risk your dollars buying cookbooks from authors who just might not be Italian or Spanish or Japanese or Thai or whatever-enough? I can now say without any hesitation that this From the Source series is everything I had been hoping for in ethnic cuisine books: books featuring the recipes of many great native-country master chefs (not just one or a few chefs) with dozens of great recipes with one or two photos for each recipe (all in color) in the book! And the recipes are the real thing: not water-downed, over-simplified Americanized clones. Enjoy the wonderful dishes in this series. I wish I owned stock in the company. I predict the series will become very famous in the not-so-distant future. Estos platos son simplemente sabroso!By the way, Mario Batali IS a great chef. I have all of his cookbooks and he's simply wonderful. Here is an Italian-descended chef who really can cook great. And did I mention his spoken Italian AND Spanish are really great?

I recommend this book and learned a great deal from it. Please consider this review in that light.This book which sets out the gene centric theory of evolution is difficult for a lay reader (me) to review. Dawkins tries to make the subject understandable to just about any non-science but reasonably well -educated reader. Throughout the book, Dawkins attempts to make it more approachable by using snappy colloquial language. Nevertheless, this is a challenging read.For a lay reader, part of the challenge is sorting through the book’s near endless digressions in which Dawkins “rebuts” the contrary views of some very well-respected evolutionists (e.g. E.O. Wilson, S.J. Gould and others). I was/am uninterested in these quarrels and have no way of evaluating their merits. However, many of these are integrated into the explanatory text so that it is hard to skip over them. The book is listed at 450 pages of which 100 pages are devoted to end- notes which contain even more rebuttals/explanations of other competing thinking in the field. I wish the book were 250 pages and the end-notes 200 pages. I believe the lucidity of the text would be much improved.

So I had to read this for my Moral Development class. And I suppose if you're just reading to find out what a breakthrough evolutionary theory looked like 50 years ago, then it's a good read. Don't get me wrong, this book was brilliant in its time, and it's likely to entertain you. However, nothing is ever as simple as Dawkins tries to make it out to be, evolution least of all. Gene-driven evolution is, to this day, considered to be an umbrella all other evolution research must fall under, and that is the crux of the problem. Some of the more recent research involving gene expression, has to work much harder than it should, in order to fall under this umbrella. Worse, genuine breakthroughs like Masatoshi Nei's "Mutation Driven Evolution" will often get sidelined because Dawkins presented mutation as secondary to natural selection. It's hard to take this book at face value when you discover research that presents locusts and a dozen species of grasshoppers having exactly the same genetic material, expressing itself differently solely based on serotonin levels. It's even harder to take it seriously when he claims that we must teach our children altruism, for it is certainly not to be found in their genetic material. To a scientist, these types of proclamations are ghastly. There is no experiment that has been performed, or can be performed, that would validate such a claim. Just because we haven't discovered an empathy gene, this can't be a proof of its nonexistence. Dawkins builds his work on scientists who came before him, drawing heavily and often on their research when it suits him. When it doesn't, such as Mendel's experiments with manipulating traits of bees and his inadvertent creation of a vicious breed that he had to exterminate, Dawkins conveniently ignores the obvious. He saves himself, more than once, by specifying that his theories are not meant to be applied to human beings, However, his language makes it clear that this is something he'd intended, before validity and reliability of his statements got in the way.All in all, my frustration is mainly with the insistence of treating this book as anything other than what it is. A brilliant work from 50 years ago that is long past its due date, and still being peddled to those who need a simple explanation of evolution, one where little science is needed. And David Dobbs rightly called it out: "The gene-centric model survives because simplicity is a hugely advantageous trait for an idea to possess."

My Copy: Oxford Univ. Press: 30th Anniversary Edition (Hardbound)There is much more to "The Selfish Gene" than is advertised, even in the most glowing of its reviews. In fact, I (not a biologist, but fascinated by evolution ever since "dinosaurs" and the first high school biology course) have been vaguely aware of this book since its initial wave of rave reviews many years ago, but never bothered to read it because as it was advertised its theme(s) always seemed pretty obvious. But something recently piqued my curiosity again, not sure what that was now, and after reading the prefatory material online I finally decided to take a look.After reading quickly through the first 3 chapters, it became apparent that there was a great deal more underlying the book than was overtly presented, that it was not just an over-extended, over-simplified, over-popularized, metaphorical presentation .... but rather that its metaphorical treatment is painstakingly faithful to an elaborate, closely-reasoned, even rigorous, scientific underpinning. At which point, I stopped reading and began again from the beginning, first the prefatory material, then from page 1, this time more slowly and more carefully, taking care to appreciate and reflect on all the markers of the underlying basis and their implications.This is a wonderful book, even beautiful in many respects, from its initial beginning (at the "beginning") with the purely chemical/physics "evolution" of the primordial soup (cast suggestively in the form of biological evolution); to the consequent continuity with the creation of "replicators", elementary "survival" cells, genes, and the beginnings of life forms; to the important distinction between genes and individuals, as genes and their "survival vehicles" (the first cells and "us", for example); to the nicely extended notion of "gene" itself, required by underlying scientific reality; to a clear presentation of the conflict between Darwinian and "group" selection and evolution; to the nature of evolution, operating (in distinct ways) in terms of both genes and individuals, aka both genes and "their" survival vehicles, aka both chemical/physics and biological evolution; to genetic kinship and its very special selective and social implications; ... ; to the delicious End Notes to the 1st eleven chapters, which provide much supporting and fascinating material."The Selfish Gene" goes on to clarify not only its expressed subject, the nature and genesis of Selfishness and Altruism, but to make clear the error, scope, and source of various (idealistic, and often political) arguments and ideas centered around group selection fallacies, including the genesis of (ill-conceived) "group-beneficial", cooperative "functions" vs. (individual) evolutionarily stable strategies (ESS) and kinship. It also sheds light on many other commonly-posed questions, among them: the fundamental "reason" for the 50:50 sex ratio (despite the number of different breeding strategies observed for male competitors); the driving source of the natural variability upon which (continuing) evolution depends; the variety and shadings of competing "strategies", which can be both conceived and advantageous, clustered around a given regard (partly on account of environmental inconstancy), one incidental, unintended but important, implication of which is that this is itself an evolutionary driving source of the natural variability upon which (continuing) evolution operates; .... and NOT so commonly posed: that "In its long journey down the generations therefore, an [ANY] average gene will spend approximately half its time sitting in male bodies, and the other half sitting in female bodies", and thus genes will generally contribute positively to both sexes, sometimes in very different ways, and that, indeed, many "purely male / purely female" effects pass (unexpressed) through many bodies of the opposite sex; and much, much more.Beautifully written and packed with wonderful insights, "The Selfish Gene" is not only well-worth the read, but will amply reward the reader in proportion to the thoughtfulness and reflection with which they read it. In fact, there is so much food for thought in the story-lines and examples (e.g., the fig, "lichenization", and organelle endosymbiosis) provided in "The Selfish Gene", that one must often stop and consider, at length and at leisure, the questions which it provokes or which Dawkins rhetorically poses.I will, however, amend Dawkins' wonderful characterization of "us" (Preface to the First Edition, p. xxi): “We are survival machines --- robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes. This is a truth which still fills me with astonishment. Though I have known it for years, I never seem to get fully used to it.” ...... by grafting it to my own previous synopsis, with the result:"We are Conditioned-Reaction Engines [built on Basic Senses + Unconditioned Reflexes (among them innate Kantian "Categories", instincts, emotions, etc.)] built as Gene-Survival "Machines" [genetically "programmed" to serve the "interests" of our genes] = Pavlo-Kantian Conditioned-Reaction, Darwin-Dawkins Gene-Survival Automatons.

This is the first of his books I've read, and I expect to read all his others before I die. A challenging topic to understand, for me anyway. Dawkins writes clearly, with wit.

I didn’t realize it then but after reading this book I see many ways the law of attraction has worked in my life. I remember standing on the steps of a gothic cottage in my twenties and owning it in my 30s with just the knowledge that it was to be mine one day - to winning a 1,000 scratch off ticket. I knew with certainty in my soul each time, that my intentions would come to fruition. I’ve also been in the opposite direction living in fear of not having enough but I broke that cycle down with self talk. Now I’m ready to try the techniques in this book and see the universe bless me again and again .

A wonderful book for those who are interested in attracting money (or other desires) for themselves. I found this book to be a step-by-step guide to attracting your thoughts or things you want. I bought one $10 scratch off ticket yesterday and won $20!!!! The that whole day I began to think positive and imagine money attracting to me. I’m off to a great start! Thanks Eddie Coronado!

I enjoyed this book, got straight to the point without beating around like some of these other LOA books do. No secrets on how to manifest a desired life and he writes in an easy concise manner using the basic rules of manifesting....ask, believe, receive!

I like this book for two reason. First was to read about people who have successfully won using LOA. Second was learning each of their techniques.

Easy to read ....gives thought with suggestions on manifesting and what worked and what didn't for these lottery winners. Book was well organized, and even had a question and answer section. Worth getting the book. Informative!

I would have liked more detail in ways to win rather than just quotes from winners already.

Nothing I didn't already know - some of the information is the same as in other publications.
