This is the second volume of the Belief series I have purchased, and both times I have been greatly pleased with the outcomes. Gonzalez's work here is all at once brilliant, academically rigorous, relevant, and readily accessible. As an academic who believes what he does should be accessible to all, I greatly appreciate Gonzalez's apparent commitment to the same ideal. You will not find in this commentary an effort to break down the Greek Luke uses, or to devote pages upon pages to the subject of whether Luke really wrote it. Those things are important, and they do get addressed in brief, but this particular text is clearly the work of someone who has done his homework, can defend his positions in the academic realm if necessary, but does not wish to scare away the laity with multiple chapters on trivial subjects which do not interest them.At every turn, Gonzalez offers fresh insight into the world of Jesus, the intentions of Luke, and the relevance of these things to the world in which we live. Much like the Jesus he describes, Gonzalez pulls no punches in challenging the faulty presuppositions of the dominant culture, but does so in such a way that said culture needn't feel alienated by his words.I strongly recommend this text for anyone who wants to learn more about the Gospel of Luke. I also strongly recommend it for those who have no such desire, as once they start reading the book, I have little doubt that the desire would follow.

The dilemma in New Testament theology today is one of influence. In a post-modern world a literary-critical approach has the tendency to get bogged down in words and socio-historical factors without applying the intention of the story to the context. It is therefore exciting to have a theological commentary enter the arena, because it not only deals with words and phrases and the socio-political context but also addresses current issues with the background of the most recent textual discoveries in mind.Justo Gonzalez's Christian history (Vol I & II) was well narrated, in my opinion, and this eloquent style works well in his commentary on Luke. I certainly enjoy the concept of reversal and the author's unique considerations as to why Luke arranged the material as it is today. I haven't completed the book and am working through it with the Revised Common Lectionary (Year C), but it has proven most useful up to now.

Nice review of Luke. I used this as a supplemental study guide and found a lot of extra material that added to our Bible study. Maybe a bit lengthy and detailed if used as the sole book for bible study groups.

This commentary hits all the major interpretive and theological highlights, and in a compelling fashion. It doesn't bog down the audience with anything trifling. Excellent commentary if one is responsible for leading a group through Luke.

Today I review the second in the new Belief series published by Westminster John Knox Press. Luke: (Belief: A Theological Commentary) is written by Justo L. González.Again, I give my deepest thanks to WJK for giving me the opportunity to participate in reviewing this extraordinary series.If Plachter's book on Mark was excellent, this second offering by González, meets that standard in every way. While Plachter perhaps placed more emphasis on the exegetical-historical aspects of the gospel, González focuses a bit more on the theological implications of Luke to our world today.In the end, this seemed most right to me. Quoting Gustaf Wingren:All good interpretation of the Bible is contemporary. If it were not so, it would not be good. . . .The Bible is not on a par with the subsequent interpretation; it is above it, as the text is antecedent to the commentary. And the interpretation is always an interpretation for the time in which it is written or spoken.There is also a distinctive flavor of liberation theology which permeates the text. This also seems logical to me, since any fair reading of Luke renders the conclusion that Luke portraits a Christ who favored the poor and the marginalized as the true inheritors of the Kingdom of God.Paramount in González's theology of Luke is that the evangelist emphasized above all that Jesus' teaching was one of the "great reversal." His teachings were indeed revolutionary to his world. His was a world of power held by Rome, of patriarchy, of Temple priests and church hierarchy. His teachings again and again told of the coming Kingdom where none of this would be so.The poor, the marginalized, the unclean, the unwanted, the unworthy, the sinners, the children, the women--all these would find a new world in God's Kingdom, one in which those who were served would serve, those first would be last, those most religious and pious would often find themselves judged less than the most simple of the country folk of Galilee, that most marginal of lands.In fact, Mr. González suggests that if one were to remove all the "reversal" stories from the text, there would be few pages left.Perhaps the most stunning theological commentary comes with González's explanation of the Paralytic. He shows how Luke weaves a story of how the teachers and scribes, the Pharisees sat around listening to the teachings of Jesus. The friends of the lame man could not get through the crowd of the listeners to reach the Healer. The end up opening the roof to lower the man to Jesus inside.González reflects on these "circles" about Christ that we as church construct. We sit as pious listeners before the Word. We block the way for those who come in need of healing and comfort."Today, just like then, there are lame people who cannot reach Jesus, because access is blocked by the numerous and tight circles, circles of religious leaders and wise and profound theologians, circles of ecclesiastical, academic, and social structures. . ."He points out that these people are not necessarily bad, but in their zeal to be at the forefront, they (we) block the way of others. We are cautioned to open the doors to those who are marginalized outside the circle. These are the people Jesus most came to help.Of special importance to me, are the continued references to Jesus' table hospitality. Too many of our churches set themselves up as arbiters of who is invited to the table of Christ. Any fair reading of Luke, suggests this is a grave error.Time and time again, as González points out, Jesus welcomed the sinner to the table, and did not require any repentance as a condition to the invitation. He teaches that we should be inviting those who cannot repay our offer, instead of those who will extend a return invitation to ourselves.González powerfully reminds us that:"All too often Christians have claimed control of the Table as if it were ours, and not his. We decide whose belief is sufficiently orthodox to share Communion with us, who is sufficiently good and pure, who belongs to the right church. . . .Rather than inviting those who seem most unworthy and cannot repay us, we invite the worthy. . ."There is example after example of gentle, and not so gentle reminders to us as readers, that the Gospel of Luke calls us to a discipleship that is not easy, and not comfortable either. Luke tells of a Jesus who comes not preaching so much an afterlife of bliss but a life offered that is truly life. A full life, filled with the Spirit, faithful to God, bearing the cross of discomfort with the joy of knowing that we are doing God's will as did He who was his image.At the end, Mr. González ponders the church of tomorrow. And as we see a decline in the Western Church and a rise in the church of the South, the African, and the East, we see new thinking, new interpretation. We see reflections through the eyes of the poor and the marginalized. He asks:". . .could it be that God's great gift to the worldwide church today is the growing church of the poor, who are teaching us to read the Bible anew? Could it be that God is using the last, the least, the poor, and the excluded to speak once again to the church of the first and the greatest?"Is this the final reversal? Such questions as these do we ponder as we read this most excellent book. Do buy it. You will not regret the decision.

This book just entered the public domain here in the United States and I heard good things about it so I thought I order a copy to celebrate Public Domain Day and introduce myself to this classic work of literature. This is a nice, sturdy hardcover edition from Penguin Classics with blue gilding on the pages and a sweet forward by Rupi Kaur who herself was inspired by the book growing up.With the first page, I was hooked and read the whole way through. The language is so elegant and rhythmic, and the lessons being taught are quite profound, for example the section on "Crime and Punishment" and how it speaks about citizens viewing criminals as "strangers" when they themselves have the same propensity to committing similar acts really stood out to me upon my first reading.Even though it's a very short book (about 100 pages long), it is so dense with imagery that it could take multiple re-readings in order to grasp every detail and inner truth being written. I plan to revisit this book every now and again in order to do so and it would serve as a nice companion for my life's journey. I highly recommend this to everyone.

What a wonderful read! I can't claim to be a full Little Women fanatic, but I did love the book as a kid. As an adult, I really enjoyed this retelling! How wonderful to have the same themes of family and sisterhood set in a context of current day. More specifically, I loved that it was in Brooklyn, that it's a blended family, that it's an interracial family, that it deals with modern day topics, etc. In a world where so many books seem to erase the existence of working class people, people of color, LGBTQ people, the military, etc., it was refreshing to read a story that acknowledged and celebrated that those things exist!The only bits I didn't like were at the beginning where there is some (what felt to me) forced exposition about how the family came to be formed. My guess is that this may have been to cater to a YA audience; myself, I think some illustrated endpapers or pre-story panels with a family tree might have done the job without being quite so heavy handed. But after that initial part, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing.Without spoiling anything, I can say there were pages that made me grin and others that got me all teary. I read the book in a day, and immediately handed it off to my wife to be read. I'm excited that the book exists, excited to have read and enjoyed it, and excited for the day when my two kids come across it on our bookshelf and ask to read it.

I purchased this book for my 10 year old daughter. She is in the 4th grade and doesn’t like reading tradional novels but loves graphic novels. I loved the original little women and thought that it would be an accurate retelling like the babysitters club graphic novels which are her favorite. There weren’t any reviews because it was so new so I didn’t realize there was a child coming out as gay in the book geared toward elementary age kids!!! It did have a great storyline and she enjoyed the book but discussion of sexual orientation isn’t appropriate for young children!! This should be geared toward middle school children.

As a fan of Little Women I wanted to read this. I loved the LGBTQ rep. The art style is amazing and adorable. I recommend this for anyone who has read Little Women and those that are looking for a quick Graphic Novel to read.

But I really liked this book. I'm a traditionalist. I first read Little Women in a beautiful hardcover edition that my mother had been given for her 12th birthday - in 1932. I also loved the film starring Katharine Hepburn as Jo March.The updates in this version were very thoughtfully done, and with a little effort one can follow the trajectories of the stories from the original and gain new insights. It might be a tad too happy ending (*spoiler alert*, Beth does die in the original), but I was willing to go along.

I never write reviews but I had to for this book. Only 1 other review? It needs far more!I am a middle school reading and writing teacher, and as you may know, there are some crappy books out there for teens- badly written, badly illustrated, trite and predictable... this book had none of that. I will be honest, I have never read Little Women (but I will now). I loved this book for many more reasons. A blended family was presented wonderfully as real people. I got caught up in their drama... (how much more can they take?) I loved the relationships as they were presented and the characters as they changed. I liked that the authors didn’t make light of poverty, as seen in so many other books and movies (I.e. “We have money but they have each other and that makes life great!”) Let’s be honest, life can suck if you’re poor, but the book did strike a good job showing these things are not opposites.Yes, some of the exposition was clunky times, and I am not sure the skin colors stayed constant throughout the book (which was a shame), but the characters drew me in. They seemed real... Black characters seemed Black, gay characters seemed gay, poor people seemed poor, everyone acted their age, unlike some movies where straight, white, rich actors play everything.As an adult who has read/watched numerous stories, I could see a couple plot twists a mile away (this will happen to her, that will happen to him...) but thoroughly enjoyed not only the journey, but the ending, which was near perfect. Not every plot line was wrapped up neatly, but that’s life, isn’t it? I would have been disappointed in this book if they had been.While I was a little dismayed at some clunky exposition (“This is Jo talking!”) I was thrilled at some history and other tidbits thrown in. I certainly didn’t know about the Black Panther/LGBTQ connection! And the writer certainly knew their musical history.As to the art, kids should love it. A hint of manga, a hint of cartoon, a hint of realism... the artist obviously thought about where the characters were located and how they interacted and moved from A to B, unlike some comic books today. No page, no panel was wasted.I want a class set. I really do.

I LOVED this re-telling of Little Women. The girls' characters were SPOT.ON. and I got the same roller coaster of emotions while reading this as when I read the original. It's a wonderful representation of a blended, bi-racial family, living in a multi-cultural neighborhood in Brooklyn. The love between the family members is so supportive and amazing. Please, please, please don't let negative reviews based on bigoted opinions affect your opinion of this novel. Even though it is about girls, I'm going to try to get my 11yo son to read it because it will spark SO many great discussions between us about so many modern-day issues.

Aaron Hartzler grew up in an extremely conservative Christian family that did not have a tv, go to movies or listen to music. Even contemporary Christian rock because "you can't mix God's words with the Devil's beat." However, as he gets older he begins to question these beliefs. He begins to love rock music because it makes him feel happy and he can't understand how that can be a sin. Aaron participates in church services, teaches Good News children's group, acts in his Christian private school 's elaborately staged dramas all the while questioning the logic of his parents' strongest held beliefs, but ultimately finding his own way to peace and understanding with his family. All this is presented in a humorous (I can't count how many times I laughed out loud.) and sincere way to become one of the best memoir of "finding religion" that I have ever read.I also grew up in a religious Christian family and though my parents, thankfully, weren't so strict, I have often come into contact with people who believe in the ways of Aaron's parents and school administration. I could so identify with Aaron because his reaction to so much of what he saw in his life was my reaction. I often felt I was reading a more articulate version of my experience. The book is extremely well written for someone who doesn't have a background in writing (He's an actor and musician), but he manages to express so much of what I felt as a teenager in an engaging and intelligent way. I had and to this day, have many of the same questions that Aaron grappled with: if God knows every decision we will make before we are born, then why give us free will, if Jesus turned water to wine, then why is it not allowed to drink a glass of wine, how can a serial killer who asks for salvation days before execution make it into heaven while a good person in the jungles of Africa who didn't have the luck to hear about the Gospel won't make it into heaven to name a few. Aaron didn't really have anyone to whom he could turn to ask questions. Aaron, today an out homosexual as far as I have been able to understand in the book's press, grapples with sexual identity, although that is more or less only hinted at in this book. I get the feeling that that will be the subject of a sequel to this book. I would be very interested in reading this story and how his family accepted this.I would recommend this book to teens and adults alike, religious and non-religious because it is such a well written journey of faith. Even though Aaron ultimately rejects his parents' version of Christianity, he is never bitter or derisive.

Contrary to the blurb on the cover, this has nothing to do with "growing up gay." The author is firmly heterosexual throughout the book (which takes him as far as college). I kept waiting for him to discover his gay sexuality, but no luck, other than his occasional expressions of curiosity and admiration for well-muscled young men. It's quite well written, and gives a good description of life in a cult so extreme that movies and TV are forbidden and Christian rock is looked on as a tool of Satan. The high (or low) point in the book comes when the father beats his son and then asks forgiveness: not for the beating but for the sin of anger. And he invites the son to beat him in return! I'll draw the curtain of modesty on this scene. At the end of the book the young man is cheerfully headed off to Bible college. In a brief postscript he talks about having rejected his abusive family and crazy religion, but this was apparently only years later.

This book is a revelation for me. I mean, I saw myself in these pages, I relived parts of my own childhood between these lines. So much of it was familiar to me to such a high degree that I would cringe, or smile, as the memories rose up all around me. I couldn't help but compare my life to Aaron's, my family to his, because I can't escape the feeling that I've lived this life. Not exactly, sure, but he gave words to emotions and experiences I don't know if I could have ever described. And the impact I felt was so strong, the connection I made with this text was so real, I told people: if you ever want to know the CORE of my being, where I come from, and what made me, read this book.I am convinced the majority of conservative Christian public will not like this book much. For them, this book will read like a story of rebellion, a willing fall from grace, a continual practice of sin.For me, this was a story of comfort: finally, someone will talk about it. And now I know that there are others like me out there. I couldn't put it down; I couldn't stop reading. I can't remember the last time I devoured a book in 2 days. (Maybe Mockingjay?)Aaron Hartzler is the son of a preacher. He grew up in a (much) stricter home than I did, but many of the experiences I had were similar--my household had a ban on secular music, but I was generally allowed to go to movies; my parents felt that my talents are to be used (probably exclusively) for the glory of God and the work of being a missionary. As a consequence, this meant writing fiction, particularly contemporary romance as it existed in 90's and today -- which is my dream, just as Aaron's dream was to act, and not just in "biblical dramas" -- would be a big NO-NO, as my mother called it "pornography in print." But still, I relate to his experience. Especially to the discipline, at times harsh, but always intended to be loving, and to the constant stream of Scripture that flowed from the mouths of both his parents and mine. There are other theological differences between our upbringings, but on the whole, there was nothing too far-fetched/absurd/beyond the scope of imagination in this book that I had difficulty comprehending (which I think some might simply just write off as "crazy".)Aaron's experience, even to me, is extreme. I think he handled the entire tale with love, care, and respect, and the memoir is beautifully, achingly written from the point of view of a teenager coming to a crossroads. It is a coming-of-age story, and a spiritual journey in a sense--the story of a boy who finds oneself amid the many things we were taught to believe and the heavy expectations placed upon him by his ultra-conservative Christian parents. He struggles with the conflicting emotions of wanting to please his parents and wanting to be his own man. And the tension that builds steadily due to the delicate balancing act of trying to reconcile the two people he feels he needs to be is layered well throughout the book. Kudos to Aaron for having the courage to tell it.I feel like I understand myself more after reading this book. I know it wasn't self-help and it wasn't meant to be therapeutic for me, but in a way it was. I found myself seeking out answers about how he reconciled the two parts of himself, but that wasn't really what this book was about. It was mostly about becoming one's own person, a journey I can appreciate.I look forward to any sequels!

I enjoyed the diversity of perspectives in this book, though some of the points and experiences are a bit repetitive. As a whole the book gives voice to the frustrations born of the 2016 election, and considers the intersectional nature of the challenges ahead.

I bought this for a girl I’m seeing and she initially loved it. As a male reader this was very insightful for me, and she said as that this book will be a great motivation for her to write about her own related experiences.

This collection of essays were enjoyable and maddening to read. I also found them strangely therapeutic after the nonstop barrage of events since the election.

The book is a feat of incorporating a variety of perspectives on the last presidential election, its contexts, and its implications. I particularly appreciate that the authors featured therein are often not in agreement with one another, something lacking from political discourse in general these days. Further, the reflections span from being focused on horse-race politics to policy to workplace equity to more personal reflections, from looking at what could have gone differently to how to move forward from here. All-in-all, this is an excellent collection of essays representing a refreshingly diverse set of viewpoints.

Loved hearing all the different ideas, opinions and facts coming from people of every walk of life.

Wonderful writing by wonderful women. I recommend this to anyone looking for an entry book into the topic of feminism, as all the essays are very easily digestible and make for good conversation starters.

There aren't a ton of "Dad" books out there that don't put all dads in that old "suit and tie" stereotype...this book is beautiful, fun-loving, and celebrates all dads for the many things that make them special and important (none of which have to do with a 9 to 5 desk job).

AMAZING! Beautiful, Busy and eye catching pages for my toddler! Bright vivid and fun story line keeps my child entertained the whole story and wants to read both! There is so much to look at and draws there attention all over, so this isn’t a super quick read at first! We love this addition!!

The board book is so cute and colorful, it is eye-catching. The "story" is pretty basic ("dad is amazing") so I'm not sure how long it will keep a child entertained, but the pages are whimsical and hopefully stirs up a creative, imaginative mind to think of all the various ways a dad is amazing beyond the pages of this book!

This book is hilarious! My daughter made us read it every night for a couple of weeks. The illustrations are cute and it ends on a line about the child being amazing. Very sweet.

I have purchased two of these books and really love them! I love the illustrations and colors a lot and my 18mo daughter loves to sit and look at the pages by herself. The companion book “My Mom is Magical” is adorable as well. I plan to gift these books frequently in the future.

My 2 year old LOVES this book along with My Mom is Magical. Great quality, great artwork and very fun. She loves them so much I had to buy them for all my pregnant friends.

This book is so AWESOME! The colors are bright and vibrant! The phrases are silly yet fun! The blue monster also reminded me of my husband, if he were an illustrated character, so of course I had to purchase it! We have read it to our newborn daughter a few times now since it arrived! We know that with time and as she grows she will be able to enjoy the book with us just as much as we love sharing it with her.

i don't know what it is about the illustrations and colors in this book and the dad book by the same author but my son LOVES them and prefers them to most of his other books.
