Although Gurney's book is not the most recent, it may be the most engaging in terms of the writer's personal voice. He generously shares his emotions about these creatures and says things that don't sound like they've been copied from other books about the pets that he champions above all others.. For example, while conceding that they're pack animals, he's willing to recommend a single guinea pig as assurance of a closer bond between owner and pet. And he extends this idea to a suggestion that the pig's sleeping box--a necessary "sanctuary," according to most GP guides--merely encourages the animal to disappear when its threatening, potentially predatory, owner enters the room. (Obviously, Gurney doesn't always follow his own advice. He owns up to having 35 or more guinea pigs at any given time.)

I love this author..having guinea pigs since 1964 this book makes more sense to us older care givers than a lot of this new setup stuff...remember in 1964 we had cardboard boxes with newspapers.....this book recommends no hidey huts as i never had and my pig was a try companion..i always had boars as recommend by the author...good feeding advice and all round housing and care...this is a book for true piggy owners that are more mature and not easly led by all the trendy information...beautiful pictures...wonderful author....

I loved this book about caring for Guinea pigs. It has many illustrations and delves into many topics not covered by other guinea pig care books, such as reproduction. I bought this book along with another for my two children to accompany their guinea pigs for Christmas. It is written in a language that my 9 year old can understand but has facts that I found myself interesting. The book is hardbound yet compact. We have never owned any kind of pet so this manual was helpful in letting you know what you are getting into.

I have raised and bred guinea pigs for many years and havegreatly benefited from information gleaned from Peter Gurney's book.His expertise and experience cover numerous and vital facets of guinea pig care and he is adept at explaining the concepts and procedures he discusses. I have read many guinea pig books and can without reservation state that Peter Gurney's book is by far the best. This book discusses important and often neglected issues of guinea pig health and care. Guinea pigs are generally very healthy animals but The Proper Care of Guinea Pigs comprehensively mentions a wide array of health conditions that may potentially arise and clearly discusses how to diagnose and treat these problems. This is by far the most thorough guinea pig book on guinea pig health care I have ever seen and it has even been instructive to many small animal veterinarians who only rarely see guinea pigs in their practices. I have read some gross inaccuracies in books about breeding guinea pigs but Peter Gurney's chapter on the subject is extremely accurate and helpful. The information I have learned from Reading this book has without doubt helped to improve and even to save my guinea pigs' lives. I strongly urge everyone who cares for guinea pigs to read this book to enrich their lives with their furry companions and to learn how to give them the best possible care.

This guy keeps a guinea pig “free-range”, lets it just walk all around his apartment. He says a bunch of pretty questionable things. Like guinea pigs dont need/play with toys. My guinea pigs love to play with toys.

This book is a must for any guinea pig owner! It is not a basic facts on guinea pigs book. It gives so much more useful information on how to take of our guinea pigs when problems arise. Especially nice feature is what to do with birthing guinea pigs, their babies, and how to be a wet nurse when necessary.The aurthor, Peter Gurney, is a guinea pig expert, and has done a great service for guinea pigs and their owners everywhere!

I only wish I could give more than 5 stars! I absolutely lovethis book. If you didn't already love guinea pigs you will after you read this entertaining and informative book. It is very helpful for guinea pig owners of all ages and the pictures are absolutely adorable. I could read it over an over and I never tire of it. If you have a g-pig or are thinking about getting one you have to have this book!

Would recommend this book to anybody who wants Guinea Pig friends. First read this book when I got my Guinea Pigs and as a result I shifted my GP's into the house with me and gained 3 housemates with incredible personalities. Always thought GP's were cute, fluffy , dumb little animals who had to live in a cage outside. Have discovered they are cute, fluffy, bossy, interactive, and they live happily inside in a large plastic under-the-bed drawer , about 8 inches high (minus lid!)(NOT under the bed!) in the kitchen.

What a phenomenal read. Stunning and absolutely brilliant read.I truly have never had a book that I resonated with more than The Idea of You. Robinne Lee was so on point with womanhood and relationships from a woman's point of view, from society's view, a mother's point of view. From a 40 year old woman's view. It was not viewed from rose coloured glasses nor was it cynical or jaded. Experience, intelligence, independence, and human nature framed this story.I was absolutely awed by Lee's writing. Poignant, simple, beautiful and real. Matter of fact even when matters of the heart are not such.The characters juxtaposed with a simplicity and normalcy that made the reader relate on a level parallel to our own lives alongside layers of intricacy that provided an intimate and almost complicit view into their lives... lives that most of us 'regular' folk could never fathom.This story had such balance with moments of reckless abandon and dire restraint. With snippets of political views and personal tastes. Interlaced with passion... not only passion for love and commitment but for life, for respect, for womanhood, for need and want.While this story was fictional and quite possibly fanfic, the author's words were never more real, raw, emotional and never rang truer to a woman's life than if I had read a biography or anecdotal memoirs.The Idea of You will forever be one of my top reads.D 5+++/5

4.5-5 stars. I could relate a lot to the heroine, Solene Marchand, in her current life chapter, even if there were times when I had difficulty warming up to her. She is recently divorced with a 12 year old daughter, Isabelle, and is co-owner of an art gallery in LA. She takes Isabelle to an August Moon concert in Las Vegas and meets the lead singer, Hayes Campbell, there. And whoa, Hayes is rather charming and attractive right from the get go. Being British only adds to his hotness and gentlemanly manners. He is also rather persistent and makes no apology for wooing Solene even though she's well aware of their obvious age gap. I loved the dialogue between them and it's obvious that Hayes knows how to navigate around the social arena in order to be the success that he is today, but he certainly isn't the typical celebrity musician, he has a very mature quality about him that is beyond his years to align well with Solene. And yet there's still this youthful quality to him that is a little bit oblivious compared to Solene's life experiences that come with time and age. What made this such a compelling read was how they embarked on this relationship, which started out as a fun attraction, and all of the obstacles that come with it because it's not glamorous at all. The author also injects other sociological arguments and attitudes regarding sexism and ageism that is still prevalent today. Watching Hayes and Solene enjoy the comfort and company they provide one another in bits and pieces while living everyday life is such a wake up call as to how a relationship like this is not easy to maintain, especially when it impacts other people, too. I could appreciate the realistic issues and storyline so when I reached the end, I had a lot of different topics to reflect on afterwards and will still be thinking about it in the days to come.

Honestly. And I've read the book twice now and thumbed through it a third time to relish in all the banter that was so perfect.Hayes and Solene. Solene and Hayes. A combination that I really didn't think could or would work, was a love story that was beyond. How can a nearly 20 year age difference and boy bander romance a successful divorcee and be GOOD at it??"This is insane. You realize that, right?" "Only if someone gets hurt." "Someone always gets hurt, Hayes."That should've been a clue as to the beauty and heartbreak of the story I was about to go on. I went into the story pretty blind and didn't know what to expect. But this behind the scenes into the world of the famous and the way we see ourselves as we grow older and how we are accepted through the media was just as big of a character as Hayes and Solene were. It is a constant in the background of their relationship.BUT what I loved and what I loved to go back and read again and again was the way they connected and listened to one another. Age did not matter. They just were and they just connected on a level that I didn't think was possible. Sure, their chemistry and intimate times were off the chart, but what made it that much better was the way they could talk to each other and want to know more and more about what made one another click. The witty banter and their obvious feelings you can grasp right through the pages was pure perfection and what I would want in a partner."You." "Me?" "You like me." he paused for a m moment upsetting our usual back and forth. "I love you," he said. without qualifiers, without conditions. He allowed it to sit there and wash over me.I'm still thinking about them and it's been nearly a month. And I still can't write a dang review that will tell you..YOU MUST READ this! You will feel all the feels. Your heart will beat again and your heart will break. You will laugh. You will smile and you will understand the reasoning behind all their actions. A very special love story that is not a traditional romance by any means. But it is a story of beauty and one I think everyone should read and experience. I could see this on the big screen for sure. The connection these two have is palpable and I want more of them. The writing is wonderful and the conversation between all the characters is flawless and believable. There is definitely more to write about with all these characters and I will be waiting for Robinne to write more of them. In the mean time, I will wait for the audio."Love, she said, was not always perfect, and not exactly how you expected it to be. But when it descended upon you, there was no controlling it."

Spirit Guides & Angel Guardians: Contact Your Invisible Helpers by Richard Webster is a thought-provoking book. I especially liked part one, which is about angels. Webster is very knowledgeable on the topic. The author teaches you how to contact your guardian angel and arch angels. I found the information to be extremely useful. The second part on spirit guides had a lot of information on séances and contacting spirits. He also had some good information on contacting spirit guides. Although I was primarily interested in learning about angels, I also found the second half of the book on contacting spirit guides interesting.

Even though I have rejected religion and all other forms of mysticism I still find it interesting that so many people are believers in spite of a lack of compelling scientific evidence in these esoteric subjects. I had never read a book that focused on angles and spirit guides so when I saw this soft cover book (Spirit Guides and Angel Guardians by Richard Webster 342 pages) on Amazon for a bargain price I purchased it.I did find this book to be an interesting read. The author clearly ignores those who might question the existence of these invisible helpers and writes as if angels and spirit guides are not figments of our imagination but real beings sent to help us. The volume is organized into two parts. The first part covers angels, your guardian angel, creating your guardian angel, working with the Archangels, ministries of healing, Angel, creativity and the arts, your angel diary, and other information about angels. The second part explains all about your spirit guides and covers ways to contact your spirit guides, spirit guides and emotional health, your limitless guides, psychic circle and other topics.If you are a true believer in religious dogma, mysticism and other esoteric subjects you will find this book very interesting and even helpful. I admit it is very appealing to think we all have personal angels and guardians who will help us with all our problems; however, as a scientific minded person I remain with my feet firmly planted in reality.Rating: 4 stars. I’ll cut to the chase: this book is one of the best introductions I’ve seen to the C++ language. I’ve read probably at least a dozen C++ books and I would say this would be the best place to start if you’ve never used C++ or even as your first programming book. There are some great C++ resources out there, but much of the material can be too advanced for a beginner and will probably scare you off before you get anywhere. With Beginning C++ Through Game Programming, Michael Dawson builds your knowledge from the ground up. The explanations are clear and easy to understand and no previous experience is required. You don’t even have to be a gamer to get value here as most of the games explored in the text are simple things like hangman or tic-tac-toe that anyone can understand.Dawson walks you through 10 chapters, each diving into a different aspect of the C++ language, starting simply and working up to more difficult topics. The chapter breakdown includes: types and variables, branching, loops, the STL, functions, references, pointers, classes, dynamic memory, and object-oriented programming. These topics really are the most fundamental building blocks of C++, and many are applicable to programming in any language. Lots of source code is shown, and the author explains each step along the way with an impressive amount of clarity. Even though I’d consider myself an intermediate to advanced programmer, I still found some things useful in this book, particularly the usage of the const keyboard which was always somewhat confusing to me. All the examples are simple command-line programs, so you don’t need any special libraries, just an IDE that can compile C++ code, such as Visual Studio which has a free version on Windows. If you use a different operating system, you can just get whatever free IDE you want for your platform as this book uses all standard C++ code so any compiler should work.What I have found reading other books is that they may explain concepts well, and even show code, but sometimes either they don’t give enough context on how real usage would look or the examples are so complex as to be confusing for a novice. In this text, the author is clearly aiming to teach beginners and explains everything in concise terms without becoming too complex. In each chapter, there is another full example game shown, which could be typed into a computer and run. I did not actually test any of the code, as I’d rather just learn from reading, but I didn’t find any obvious errors. Each of these games are fairly straight-forward, with apps like guess my number, hangman, madlib, tic-tac-toe, etc. My one complaint is that the final chapter covers a full blackjack game, and this was much more complicated than the previous chapters and may be a bit too advanced. However, it still may be helpful to some to see what a more involved program might look like. While the title of the book is about “game programming” I wouldn’t say you need to be a gamer to gain insight here. Though having some interest or familiarly with games can help, I’d still recommend this book for anyone interested in C++ or just wanting to learn programming in general. The author manages to cover the most key aspects of the language without burdening beginners with the more arcane constructs that will likely confuse you.Keep in mind, C++ is a beast of a language, and one book will not make you a pro overnight. After reading this title, you will still likely need other resources before you are ready to build your own apps or games. With gaming in particular, you will likely also need to learn how to use libraries, various APIs, etc. and none of that is covered here. So think of this as merely a light introduction, which will build a foundation your can bring to other more complex books. That said, I really can’t imagine a better book for people wanting to get started with programming in C++. This would work as a great first coding book for teenagers or even younger. I’m not sure there is a better beginning C++ book out there, and this is highly recommended.

I've been programming on and off for about 4 years now mostly in Android development. I've recently turned my eye to this book which I bought about two years ago(and never cracked open) because I want to start playing around with the Unreal Engine and Game AI. I skipped all of the basic programming concepts which I am very familiar with (whats a variable, operator precedence, for loops, etc) which is practically chapters 1-5. The second half of the book gives a beyond excellent introduction to the characteristics that distinguish C++ from all of the other languages I have experience with(C#, Java, Python, JavaScript, Swift). The examples are thorough and the author speaks in a straightforward manner. The example code is clean and concise and really drives home the point of each concept. I'm on chapter 9 / 10 right now and after reading this far I feel confident reading any programming tome/tutorials with examples in C++ and applying them for my own purposes. Definitely recommend for any beginnersI read through all of the 1 star reviews and all of them were unwarranted because the reviewers bought this book expecting it to teach them how to program a game. THIS IS NOT what this book is for. This book is intended to teach you the ins and outs of the C++ language with a game programming perspective/theme.

I bought this book in 2 or 3 years ago.As a student in university, I was learning about game design and development. and I had very little experience scripting with ActionScript 3. I wanted to get more into programming, so I decided to go ahead and start with this book. This book does an exceptional job teaching you the basics of coding. If you have little to no experience with code this by the end of chapter 5 I promise you you will be very comfortable read and writing code (with limitations of what you have learned). It contains very easy exercises that get you thinking about the code and by the end of each chapter you can rest assure that you will become very familiar with the content you just read, and not just that the code is well written and it pushes you to write good code.Bonus:By the time I was done with the book It was easy for me to transition from C++ to C#, C, objective C and swift. so if you have the time and dedication I highly recommend this book.

I absolutely love this book. I have always wanted to understand how games are made and decided to begin learning C++. This book not only is easy to understand and teaches well, but it is focused on the very subject I want to learn C++ for. You actually feel like you are learning useful material (though very simplified). It also has end of chapter questions without answers that really challenges you to write or re-write a program to solve the answer. Believe me it can be frustrating but when you finally solve those questions there is a large amount of joy, excitement and a desire to continue learning. I would highly recommend this book to anyone just beginning to learn C++ to better understand game programming.Truthfully I can not think of any negatives.

This book is a great introduction to C++. It's also a really good book on C++ for people who are already C programmers. It's an easy read, it goes at a good pace, and is full of relevant code examples, which are explained line by line. I particularly liked the section on vectors and STL containers, but it is all good. I have no real interest in game programming per se, but we've all played (and probably coded) tic tac toe and hangman etc. at some point, and these games provide excellent opportunities to put the various C++ features to work. If you want to create games with fancy graphics, then this probably isn't the book for you, but if you want a solid, hands-on, quick and easy introduction to C++, you might want to try this book.

This is a fictional account of the real Margaret of Wessex who became Queen of the Scots in 1070. The author focuses on the early part of her marriage to Malcolm, King of Scots. The marriage was, by all historical accounts, a great love story and Malcolm was smitten at first sight of her, yet you won’t read about it here. Instead, there is a fondness that develops between them over time as Malcolm comes to admire his saintly queen.The story begins in 1069 as Margaret and her family seek sanctuary in Scotland at the time the Conqueror is ravaging Northumbria. Margaret desired a convent life but it was not to be. According to this story, Malcolm ignored her for weeks after she came to his court but then decided to wed her. I found that hard to believe, a virile Scottish warrior ignoring a beautiful Saxon princess right before his eyes. Then, too, the description of Malcolm and Margaret’s wedding night was a dull moment that I just couldn’t quite see happening the way it was described given all we know about the two of them. But, ah well.Malcolm was known to be illiterate and Margaret read to him; however, in this story he was reading treatises on law when she met him and she just taught him more. Margaret is portrayed as history records her: devout, smart and committed to seeing Scotland turn toward the Roman church. Though she was kind to her subjects, she did not appear to adopt the Scots’ culture. Instead, she gave her children decidedly English names and Malcolm went along with it, presumably to indulge his wife who brought him much honor.Perhaps the most interesting character, at least to me, was Eva, the daughter of Macbeth's stepson and heir, Lulach, who was slain by Malcolm in order to gain the throne. Taken to Malcolm’s court as a hostage, Eva has spunk, dividing her loyalties between her family who wants her to spy for them and the queen she has befriended. I really liked Eva. She is the only other character whose perspective we have besides Margaret. We are never inside Malcolm’s head and he remains something of an enigma.King’s attention to detail is laudable and she brings 11th century Scotland to life. It’s a fairly tame but well-told story of the Scot who married the woman who became Scotland’s only royal saint. We get to see how she might have been with those who served her and those she served for she was ever doing charitable acts. It proceeds at a leisurely pace and historical fiction lovers will find it a worthy read.

For me, character development is the most important aspect of good novel writing. I want the characters to be believable, and even the villains should evoke some sympathy from me. I found all of the characters in this novel to be real and well rounded. The book seemed well researched and the author was clear in her afterword about was historically accurate and what was imvented. I loved the book and now want to read her book about Mac Beth.

This is a romance based and fictionalized to give the view of Scotland's first Saxon queen. Drawn from actual historical references we are swept into the love that changed a society from warring clans to medieval world view. Malcolm and Margaret come to life from the pages as people you care about more and more. Exciting, dramatic and insightful. Fun read with the advantage of learning a bit of histiry. Give me more!

Another pious woman who was queen. Can't help it, the way the church ruled back in those days irks me. Having said that, Margaret was a thoughtful woman who truly cared about the poor and the infirmed. Although she wanted to be a nun, her life's path led in another direction. Personally I think this direction is what allowed her to become a saint. Good book and I truly enjoyed it.

Cultural and religious practices of Celts, Normans and Saxons come into conflict after the death of Macbeth in early twelfth-century Scotland. A foreign princess emerges from exile in Hungary to become the Queen of Scotland. Her husband, a course and violent ruler succumbs to her saintly virtues. She leads her husband, King Malcolm, toward refinement. A fictional character, a female bard of some note, becomes a hostage to the king and a bond develops with the queen. The bard, Eva, is expected to serve as a spy to Gruadh, her grandmother, queen of a northern area. The bond between Margaret and Eva presents some soul-searching for both women as rivalries, both new and old, impact Margaret’s pursuit of saintliness.

This is a lovely and beautifully written novel of Queen Margaret of Scotland that has opened up a whole new era of history for me. My interest has been sparked, and I want to know more of Margaret, Malcom and their legacy. This novel was very well-written, and the author painted a wonderful picture of wild and rustic Scotland and all it's natural beauty. Even her descriptions of the castles and churches were poetic. Susan Fraser King has truly brought history to life in these pages, and I loved every word.I found Margaret to be an expertly crafted central character, as we are able to see her as a living, breathing woman--a wife and a mother--and not just as a Queen and a saint. Knowing that Margaret was later named a saint by the Church is fascinating to me, and made reading this novel all the more enjoyable. Margaret is purely human and is shown to have many faults, as we all do, and yet through her acts of charity and kindness it becomes easy to see why she was regarded so highly. It casts a different light on the concept of a "saint". This novel has given me much food for thought regarding that.One of the nicest touches in this novel was the inclusion of primary sources: translated quotes from medieval texts. They were a really great addition to the main body of the novel. Also, the author's note at the back was very interesting and showed the author's passion for the era. I just love reading the words of someone who loves history as much as I do.I definitely recommend this novel, and it will always have a spot on my shelf.

Read this after Hollick’s “I am the Chosen King” and “The Forever Queen.” Different authors, but the stories/history is closely related. I visited Edinburgh in 2009, where I sat and prayed in Saint Margaret’s Chapel built in the castle at the top of the ridge, before I really knew who she was, why she was sainted, or read this book. It’s a charming chapel. Pretty neat having seen all several of the locations to better visualize as reading this story.

The claims seem to be strongest in the Murray-Darling basin.The difficulty in sustaining this hypothesis is the degradation of oral history due to genocide, and the destruction of Aboriginal artefacts to forestall Native Title claims. History is being erased before our eyes.Also, the prevalent accepted wisdom that Aborigines were hunter-gathers makes it difficult for this hypothesis to be investigated properly.

Sensational ideas presented non-sensationally, this book is a must read for everyone who has not yet read it.I'm a white Australian woman aged 70+, born and raised in Tasmania, the most Anglo-minded of the states, whose history of harsh treatment of convict and Aboriginal people is as dark as the worst excesses of cruelty on 'the mainland' as we call it. My urban grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles were well educated, many in professional occupations. In my day, as Bruce Pascoe reminded me, our history courses were anglo- and euro-centric. The senior history teacher was so very boring that I opted out of history asap, which I now regret, but even if I had stuck with it, I now know that I would have learned very little about our indigenous people because, basically that teacher and the rest of my teachers even through tertiary level, knew very little of the ancient civilisation that prevailed before europeans come to the island continent now known as Australia. I knew plenty about the Ancient Egytians, Etruscans, Mesapotamians, Greeks, Romans and a bit about medieval Europe, European colonisation of Africa, Asia and the Pacific, but almost nothing about the Australian Aborigines - they were so little mentioned it was as if there was nothing much to tell, anyway. (Incidentally my education rarely mentioned the Americas, either, except as an object of european exploration and colonisation) Though still below voting age I remember the heated discussion about the May 1967 referendum which passed to at last count Aboriginal people in the national census. Until I went to live in an Outback mining centre as a young bride, I had never seen, let alone met, anyone Aboriginal. For a long time now (not by choice but hubby's work) I've been living outside Australia, and so though I've learned a bit about these people along the way, I've missed much of the daily talk on radio and tv that might have taught me more sooner, and introduced me to the things in this book far sooner. Like many readers, I found this book fascinating, exciting and some how hopeful for a better future as more non-Aboriginal Aussies come to understand not only enormity of what happened to the Aboriginal civilisation, (which we can't unwind back to pre-1788) I hope the facts and ideas in this book lead to wider understanding of more appropriate land management across our damaged continent, and respect for our Aborigines' history and achievements.

Looked at from even as close as our nearest major neighbour, the third rate Anglo-multi-culture that is the legacy of the ongoing occupation is of no global significance, while even those tiny hints of the riches of our indigenous culture which make it into the wider world and much more highly valued. We occupiers have more to learn form indigenous Australians than they have from us. Our highest aspiration should be to find a way forward together which ends and redresses our misdeeds.
