My son needed a historical fiction book for a middle school class. I remembered this from my childhood classes and remembered I really liked it. As my son started it, he had a hard time getting used to reading the "older" English. I told him that he would get used to it as he read and it would read faster. He trusted me and kept reading. Once he got used to the format of the writing, he LOVED it and could not put it down. He liked that the reader got to meet many famous people through Johnny Tremain's experiences and see a possible way that the participants in the American Revolution could have thought and acted.

I bought this book for my 9-year-old son who is an avid reader. I also reread the book. He reads constantly, and I’m trying to get away from exclusively science fiction series.The book is a classic, probably known and remembered by lots of parents. I read it in 9th grade and remembered that Johnny was a silversmith who destroyed his hand and then worked for a newspaper leading up to and through the Boston Tea Party. I also remembered that his best friend was killed in battle. That’s about all I remembered when I bought this award winner for my son.Rereading as a parent, there were several things I newly appreciated. First, this is an interesting picture of apprenticeships prior to the Industrial Revolution. Johnny’s apprenticeship as a silversmith started young and he shouldered significant responsibility early in life. When he lost the ability to be a smith, he looked around for a new trade. I also appreciated that Johnny was situated in the midst of some of the most famous leaders of The American Revolution. This is really historical fiction, and got my son interested in learning more history.However, as I reread I also noticed how casually this text refers to African American minor characters’ roles in the community as relatively unimportant. Sometimes they are even referred to by race but without names. This may be an accurate (or even romanticized) portrayal of how white people treated and thought about African Americans in that time period, but not one I want my son to read and accept as ok. We have since gotten a book about African American leaders during the time period to see another side of the story. With this intervention, I’m excited we read Johnny Tremain, but I wouldn’t assign it as independent reading without discussions built in.

I first read Johnny Tremain when I was about twelve. I loved it then and I still love it today. The character development of Johnny is excellent. While he changes quite a bit over the course of the book, he doesn’t change so much as to be unbelievable. The descriptions of the goings on in Boston are exciting. I highly recommend reading it to anyone interested in or studying the time just prior to Lexington and Concord.

I love how the story ties in with real history. Getting to see and be introduced to such people as Paul Revere, Sam And John Adams, John Hancock, and more. Reading this helps a child to get an idea of the emotion and tension that was felt by the people at that time.Experience the time period where such things happen such as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and Paul Revere's ride, along with the the infamous day in April, when the war began.

Ms. Forbes writes with a gift for characterization and intertwining of setting and historic action. Social Studies teachers could include this fictional account of a life lived and affected by events leading up to America's Revolutionary War. Every character is well-rounded and develops as the tale unfolds in a relentless series of dramatic plot events. For literature teachers examining Author's Craft, this is the book. Every page is jammed-packed with figurative language, the rule of three, character and plot development. foreshadowing, flashback - you name it - Ms. Forbes uses it. The book was published as America fought WWII and the novel's themes are as relevant today as when the book was published: the nation is only as strong as each individual, character is everything, life is hard, sacrifice is more than a word, cunning and craftiness are necessary lifeskills, and more. Even the least character in this novel plays a starring and highly inspiring example of human pathos: Pumpkin. If you've never read Johnny Tremain, it's well worth the time.

To my shame I only knew this story via the Disney film. The book itself is excellent; a wonderful reading experience for young people (and not so young!) who want a sane and scholarly glimpse of life in pre-revolutionary Boston.The amazing thing is that I and my family all knew the author's family, Esther Forbes sisters both lived in my home town. Her brother- in- law took a portrait of me as a child (and won a first prize with it!) "Johnny Tremain" is an excellent companion read for a youngster who's parent(s) are reading her magnificent work, "Paul Revere and the World He Lived In." For the larger work she received the Pulizter; for the smaller one, the Newberry Award.I bought this book as a birthday present for my grandniece who lives near Boston and has the imagination to appreciate exploring Boston's "Freedom Trail." I think it well may be a family affair this summer!I hope Amazon continues to carry these classics. We need them now, perhaps especially now!

Loved this book! Short but powerful! And a book I want to read over and over again! Thank you very much!

I liked the easy to understand comparisons made to computers. I've never heard it referred to in that way before, and it really helped the concepts click for me.I only wish the author had gone more into "dunamis", adding more explanations with backup scriptures and biblical anecdotes. That wasn't taught coming from my background, and I wanted to know more. I'll have to look for more information, and see if the author has written any other books that cover the topic.Overall a very good guide on spiritual warfare. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Essilfie's books.

I rarely read books outside those recommended by the Catholic Church, however, I picked this book out maybe because of the colorful and interesting Cover. I was extremely pleased with its contents. Isaac gives a perspective rarely encountered. I had never quite heard an explanation of the battle of unseen forces as well as Isaac explains it. I plan to follow this author in his other books.

The book was not as in depth as I would have liked it to be but understood where the author was going.

Very good book, allows you to identify with things that attacks the mind and ways to protect our selves from the attacks the dark side.

This is such a surprising book. I mean we all know that Fry is brilliant but who thought he could write perhaps the best college-level introduction to poetic form and effect? There are, yes, quite a few books about poetic form and effect but . . . this is not only the funniest, smartest, well-organized, and insightful one I've seen it's just flat out the best book of its kind.Fry is perhaps not well-served by his publisher . . . the book needs some development work here and there (basically just filling in bits and piece of information that Fry skips over, expanding the examples, and fleshing out the references) and the design, both of the cover and text should be reworked. The current interior and cover, at least in the US edition, are basically just splitting the difference between a serious textbook and a trade book but the book, and Fry, and students would be much better served by a interior design that formalizes the hierarchies of information in the text and is professionally typeset by a designer who is used to dealing with complex instructional texts. (Oh, I'm sure it's a bit of a hard sell to say "textbook" in a meeting about a book by Fry but there's no reason a good designer can't deal with the information design and make the design modern and lively.) The text is typeset perhaps slightly better than your average mid-list trade book but it is a complex text about, hello!, the English language . . . Fry's overall presentation is undercut by the everyday sloppiness of the typesetting and the attempt to squeeze an instructional text into a simpler standard non-fiction trade text design. Take a look at, say, a Princeton University Press title that covers similar ground and you'll see immediately that there are much better, more useful, ways of designing a book like Fry's. Likewise, thought a much easier problem to solve, the cover doesn't help position the book in the market. It's not a standard trade non-fiction book, it's a freaking genius and classic textbook that every college student should have at the ready. The cover doesn't have to be dry and boring, it can be wild and lively but . . . it needs to be a cover that looks like it belongs next to the CMS, a Fowler's, and a Webster's.Publisher! Hello! This book could, and should, have a long, long tail. There's no reason I can think of that the book can't be a _standard_ textbook for nearly every college student subjected to a class in poetry. It's not half as dry as the Turco book on poetic form and it's not as detailed as the Miller Williams but I suspect it could have a larger, more enthusiastic audience than either of those books . . . and both of those have gone through many editions. The Fry might be hard sell in a publishing meeting but I suspect it's much, much easier sale at, say, a college English department meeting. What adjunct English prof wouldn't leap at a chance to use a textbook that's a good excuse for watching a bunch of Youtube clips of Fry and Laurie?So, all of my complaints aside, this is a completely unexpected Five Star Book, easily the best available undergraduate introduction to poetic form and effect. Buy it. Read it. Laugh. Cry. Write poetry!

I LOVED this book.I am reasonably new to poetry, having only been reading and writing it extensively for a couple of years. I've looked on-line for "how to write better poetry", which is well worth doing, however, Stephen Fry takes all the results from all the google searches and condenses it down into a superbly ordered and explained treatise on why he likes poetry and how poetry is written, analysed and discussed. All of it told in an accessible, witty and fun way. Typical Fry.I have been hanging out with poets for years. I discuss their work, I discuss my own work, but we rarely, if ever, discuss meter. Most poets I know and talk to barely know what meter is... it's that thing that the high school teacher glazed over, because she didn't understand it herself and that was just one of the things on the curriculum that has to be taught on the way to sanitizing poetry out of the students (I generalize - that was my poetry experience. If you had better, I envy you!). Fry makes it front and centre. Poetry and meter are linked and understanding meter will make you a better poet. I believe this strongly. His overviews of the different types of rhyme (he has at least 4), poetry form and all his examples are lots of fun to read. I was particularly taken with the villanelle form, which Fry confessed, was the form that led to him writing this book in the first place.I borrowed this book from the library and took it on holiday with me. About half way through, I fought to get an internet connection and ordered a copy, which is now sitting in front of me. It is now my poetry reference and one I go to often.

It’s been a long time since my last poetry class, and I’ll have to confess that even back then my attention sometimes wandered. Stephen Fry is a writer, comedian, and actor. He was the comedy partner of Hugh Laurie (“House”) for years, and if you saw the recent The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, he played the foppish Master of Laketown. His writing talent shines here, and the Ode Less Travelled is a wonderful review (or introduction, if you never studied poetry) to the mechanics of poetry. Fry covers most of the basic components of poetry, and offers wonderful examples from great and lesser-known literature, as well as his own hilarious constructions. The book is designed as a tongue-in-cheek workbook, where you are encouraged (ordered?) to try the various techniques yourself. If you have an interest in poetry, or wonder why some people do, this book is a delightful learning tool.

This book has proven its worth tenfold! As a student of British Literature, I have often found myself a bit anxious when it comes to writing about poetry. Mr. Fry has come to my rescue countless times with this book. His clear descriptions and gentle encouragement have turned my fear into appreciation. It is intelligent without being verbose. Even if you have no intention of writing poetry, students and the casually interested will reap benefits from this book. I can't think of a better teacher than Stephen Fry and am indebted to him for helping me in my hour of need.

This is a wonderfully witty book. If, before I retire, I teach creative writing again, I'm using it as my text. It fairly brims with wit and wisdom. My only quibble's with the fact that, when Fry criticizes Hardy's use of the word "hue" in "The Convergence of the Twain," he does so in what appears to be blissful ignorance of the fact that "hue" does not have to mean "color." I don't think it's fair ofFry to pick on Hardy for having known more about the word "hue" than Fry does. All this hue and cry about "hue," however, is small potatoes up against the delight that Fry offers us page by page in this sterling book.

I had never heard of Kelly Minter, and honestly wasn't expecting much out of this little workbook. Most reviews were good, but there was one that accused it of being shallow, and as a skeptic, I secretly wondered if it was going to be a boring exercise of fluff and shallow ideals. I'm SO glad I still gave it a chance! Yes, I've read 1,2 and 3 John many times, but I had never considered these little books this deeply...or realized there were so many hidden treasures to mine out of them. This was an excellent, thought-provoking Bible study that was very sound and dared to challenge us too work a little for the reward. I've done quite a few studies over the years, but this is one of my very top favorites now. Kelly had a refreshing way of looking at the Scriptures that was able to bring them to life as if you were almost experiencing the story in person. I was able to glimpse the passion of John...and the reason he was able to speak so to the recipients. He had earned their love by taking time for a real relationship with them...he was talking to them, heart to heart, as opposed to speaking down at them, condescendingly.I dislike busywork as much as the next person, and I'm not much for inanely filling in blanks. I struggle with procrastination, too, like the average bird! However, if I skipped a day here or there, I wouldn't just forget it and move on, I was compelled to go back and finish it because it was really just that good.Now that I know what I know, I hope to check out some more of her books.Thank you, Kelly, for pushing me to study harder. <3 I appreciate you being real, yet striving for more!

Great study. It's the first I've done from this author and found it easy to follow. Our women's group did this along with the corresponding videos. She's the kind of speaker and writer that you'd want to invite over coffee. Very easy to listen to and to read... (she writes much the same way she speaks which is great!) It's a good study for a range of maturity along the journey of faith, but is definitely good for those who are still getting their feet wet. Studying John is always good for all those on the path of the faith. I loved that she included recipes scattered throughout the book. It contributed to making the book quite inviting!

Great study! I read this book with my women's bible study group and we loved it. Each chapter had passages for us to look up and apply to our daily lives. Kelly Minter is a very relatable writer and she added a personal story to each section of the book. We read one chapter a week which meant doing an hour plus of reading each week. I especially loved the fact that there were yummy recipes for us to try. Our group had a big potluck once we finished the book. I definitely recommend this book especially for a women's bible study group.

Ms. Minter has blessed the Christian Community with a fresh take on a little studied section of God's Word. The books of 1, 2, and 3 John are short and sweet, but somewhat challenging...like facing a journey through the wilderness. When taking on such a task, we are always better off with a guide, a teacher who will lay out each step simply and carefully, with all the love and admiration they would show their best friend. Kelly's subtle sense of humor and soothing voice makes the video portion of the study engaging and delightful, while the workbook and daily study is filled with helpful tools to understand The apostle John's occasionally challenging language. An added bonus are the recipes included after each week's studies! When I think of this study and Kelly Minter, I think of being refreshed not only in God's Word, but in Kelly's presentation of it. If you are looking for an in depth study, but need a little quieter, calmer and sweeter approach, Kelly's your girl.

I have done my share of Bible studies but man this is a hard to follow study and she comments about John having ADHD. Offta. There is a lot of good material here but you need to be a intellect junkie to stay in it. We had over 20 people start this study and few remained through week 2 actually reading the study. Even the definitions that were given were hard to understand.If you do this study make sure you have a very experienced teacher. There is some good stuff in here but hard to get the average person to participate

Our study group is in the middle of this study on I-2-3 John. Kelly has done a very good job of captivating everyone with her wisdom in sharing the truth of God's word. We are all appreciating the study and would highly recommend it. Because of our limited time, we do each week's session over a period of two weeks -- DVD one week; discussion and study the next. It has worked out well.

This an excellent study of these 3 epistles. Kelly Minter gives examples people, especially women, can easily relate to. She has also dug into the Greek meanings to deepen our understanding of such words as "know," "love," and "remain." It is one of the best studies I have done on 1,2, & 3 John. The videos are good, too.....not too long & not too short.

The content of the product is professional, inspiring and life changing. Kelly Minter's heart and soul truly testify the love Jesus has for all people.The physical product is defective. I discovered this product was defective after the Amazon policy allows returns. There are 7 sessions on 2 disks. The 4th session is on the first disk, but ends before the end of the session. The labels on the disks are not the same as the content, which is also confusing. I ordered a second set of the DVDs hoping that only the first set was defective, but that was not the case. I am returning the second set within the Amazon 30-day return policy. I am disappointed that there's no recourse to return the first defective product, or exchange it for one that is in working order. Selling defective products is not acceptable.
